Regionals are a way for management to keep wages down.
*prepares for flame war*
Costs, not wages.
Are we really so short sighted as to believe that mainline management cares what regional pilots make?

Wages as well....mainline not regional. Having the option/threat of farming out mainline flying keeps wages at mainline low. If the DC9, mad dog, and 73 pilots cost too much, management has the option/threat of giving that flying to the regionals at lower costs. There have been lots of substitutions of 2-3 RJ's in place of 1 mainline in the recent past. This keeps a negative pressure on narrowbody mainline wages....and you could even argue that same pressure moves upward as well to the larger a/c.
Haters gonna' hate....

I had the distinct pleasure of trying to explain this phrase to a 60 year old a few days ago.
"uh, it's like how some people are never happy? Or... crap.... uhhh...expressing indifference towards someone's negativity? Aww never mind"

Those decisions are economically untenable on a long term basis, which mainline companies are starting to figure out, and much quicker than we are, I might add.
