Heard over the radio

Over ABQ center:

Bonanza 1234: Albuquerque center BONANZAAA 1234????

Center: Aircraft calling stand by- I'll get to you in a few minutes

Bonanza: BONANZAAA 1234 REQUEST FLIGHT FOLLOWING TO ST JOHNS AT 10,500 AND UHHH WE'RE OVER THE LAKE JUST SOUTH OF THE SANTA FE AIRPORT OVER (He was speaking very loudly and in your face like hense the all caps)

Center: BOnanza 1234, I told you to stand by! that means wait your turn.

Bonanza 1234: UHHHH DID YOU HAVE A BEACON CODE FOR US?!?!?!?!

Center: That is it! I'm unable to give flight following to you!

BOnanza: NO FLIGHT FOLLOWING????!!!!!???

Center: Affirmative, good afternoon.

This kind of crap gives GA a bad name and is all too common among the weekend warrior types (I'll bash WN guys asking for short cuts when everyone else is trying to get around a level five in another thread ;)). If you can't understand basic ATC procedures then stick to flying around your uncontrolled traffic pattern . The controller was very busy, but was willing to take as many VFR aircraft as he could handle (ABQ center is very easy to work with if you can work with them, both IFR and VFR). By the sound of it he had every intention of giving flight following, but Dr. Bonanaza M.D. had to be a jerk about it. What is it with Bonanza drivers and radio comms anyway? 9 out of 10 stupid things I hear over the radio are from bonanza drivers. Rant over.

Come on now, 9 out of 10 is a bit much, no?

It's more like 6 out of 10 with the other 4 coming from a mooney

;)

Dr. Bonanaza M.D.

Had an instructor a few years back who is a retired CAL 777 capt. He was talking with one of his ex-coworkers one day about a terrible pilot he was giving a BFR to. He was telling this tale of how this guy couldn't do anything right. Seemed like it was his first time in a plane, even though he was a commercial pilot. My instructor's friend had the best one liner I've heard. "Must have been a doctor." Needless to say, it was the truth.

Just out of curiosity...when told to stand by, what is the proper amount of time to give them a call again if you haven't heard anything? I know it depends on the situation, but lets say there is not a lot of radio chatter and its starting to feel like they forgot about you.

I flew a Mooney yesterday with a Bose headset. I don't know if it was my allergies or the headset, but I sounded like an actual pilot and not a little kid playing Flight Sim. I guess I'm one of the lucky 6 Mooney pilots who aren't at a complete loss on the radio.

Everytime I've been asked to standby, they usually call back with "Ok, aircraft I told to standby, go ahead with request".

Unfortunately, i know one weekend warrior who flies IFR altitudes on VFR flights and wonders why ATC gets upset with him.

Yeah on the other side of the coin, I was in so-cal once and called for flight following and the controller's only response was"no." No callsign, no standby or anything.

Now I really don't care if you don't want to give me flight following, but just saying "No" over the radio makes me think that someone is screwing with me. After the third time the controller finally came back with "(tailnumber), unable flight following."

All I needed to hear.

5 min or when the controller/workload seems to drop.

Just before and after keying the mic, he probably let loose with some other choice words. I can't believe some of the things other controllers say to their radar blips while unkeyed. Flipping off the scope while giving a clearance has to be my favorite though.

I'm not sure what I did to piss the guy off. The rest of my group got flight following just fine from him, I just happened to be the last in line. Some controllers I get to a point where I just want to say "Hey man, maybe this isn't the job for you, you seem unhappy."

Like fuelers who complain about having to fuel ;)

Mooney drivers are worse! "Have you ever towed a Mooney before!?!?!!!?11?! You know about the tow limits right?!?!111?!"

I lol'd because it's so true. Every single Mooney owner that has come in always starts to freak out when I mention I may have to move the plane.
