Can you major in something else and still fly?

It's not your professors' jobs to care about your future for you. All they can do is feed off your own enthusiasm, which judging by most of your posts on here, you never really developed while at UND.

I was enthusiastic going into it. I lost that very quick after dealing with bumbling administrators and professors who acted like they were on a different tier of civilization than you.

People from UND really seem to have a backwards way of thinking because this is the third or forth time I have heard someone say this. If I care about my future and show it through work, I would sure hope that my professors would. They are paid big money to help people succeed and learn, that is their job! Otherwise, why in the hell are professors there? To collect a paycheck? I don't know, I do not agree with people on here who do not seem to think that professors should be held to high standards of excellence. . Sorry if I misunderstood your post, but that is what I got out of it.

Hi folks,

First, I'll be out visiting UND the end of March (25-27) so if anyone is around, let me know! Second, is it possible to go to UND and get a degree in let's say Political Science (I'm a history guy and would be a teacher) but still fly there and get ratings or am I restricted to Aviation Management or whatever it is? I don't know but Av. Management doesn't seem like a steady degree idea or am I wrong?

Thanks!
Mike

Mike,

Short answer yes you can major in whatever you like and minor in professional flight, which is all your flight ratings to include Commercial, Instrument and Multi Engine. To enroll in the CFI CFII and MEI course you just need to have completed AVIT 325. The minor in professional flight is all those flight courses and their associated ground schools. Not too much on top of your other major's class load.

However, if you are not planning on flying professionally, ie airlines, corporate, air ambulance, cargo, etc. I would advise against UND for flight training and look at GFK Flight support, www.flygfk.com (I think they still do instruction) or look over in Crookston KCKN. UND's 141 program is geared around crew type flying, checklists, SOPs, etc. For someone who just wants to be a "private" pilot the rigidity of the course may be too much in terms of "why am I doing this?" You can be a perfectly safe and competent pilot without all the other stuff that "professional" pilots add in to work as a crew in a revenue generating environment.

Nope, you are just the same old tired lazy kid who doesn't want to work for what they want. No one was or is going to hold your hand the whole time and when you realized it the only way to protect your ego was to lash out and bash. You have never given a precise example of anyone not caring or helping or talking down to you. All you have done is bash the good people of GFK, call the city a "slophole" and complain about having to walk outside, like that is some kind of human rights violation that requires the UN to be involved.

Just like the little clique, you were so desperate to be a part of, before you; you have not and cannot provide any valid criticisms of UND as a school or flight program. There are plenty of us out in the workforce now as Captains, CP, DOs etc who think UND did an ok job as do our employeers, check airmen, etc. If you can't handle the small amount of bureocratic red tape that is present at UND, just move to MT now and build a cabin.

You don't know me, so please don't act like you do just based off of an internet forum. Yes, I have given examples, but I am not going to get into giving names again. Also I will add, that I more so left because of incompetence from the university than bureaucracy (They have spell check for a reason, learn to spell if you want to insult someone and make up something about them being lazy without even knowing them). Let me tell you, I have been studying all weekend instead of going out and that is a picture of how I operate; that does not at all sound like a shady work ethic to me.

I have/had no desire to a part of that "clique" ever, so I don't know where you are going with that.

The only question I have for you is why is UND invulnerable to criticism? And secondly, the vibe I am getting from some of the people that are UND fanboys, is that you must destroy any opposite viewpoints by insulting the persons character, how mature does that seem? UND Aerospace has been on a decline in the past decade in quality from what people I have talked to have said, and also, things can never be perfect, so why not listen to criticism to make things better? Even in your world, there must have been things, you would have liked to change.

Edit- I will also add that GFK flight support has a PPL listed at an estimated cost of 9500 dollars right now. At my current FBO if I had no hours it would run 4k at the most to complete my PPL. For a person on a budget not trying to (or a person who literally cannot) take out loans, GFK is not the place to go.

I don't know you personally but I know your type, nothing is ever your fault and you are always smarter than everyone else. I have never said UND is above or should not critiqued. I have simply stated all the things people like you whine about are without merit and are nothing more than a poorly veiled smoke screen to try to cover up your own shortcomings.

Provide a valid critique and we can have a discussion, complain that you have to walk outside or you had an accounting error on a paycheck as a reason to avoid the school, well you get the idea. Your charachter is getting assaulted because you hold it up as being without error, whilst your driving history begs to differ not to mention your work ethic when it comes to a simple class and flight lab as AVIT 102.

You want to talk about allowing too many students into 102 and 325 with limited numbers of aircraft, lets talk. You want to talk about the Leads and the total inability of a line instructor to get support from their "boss" for problem students, such as you, lets talk. You want to talk about practice areas that are too far away and too crowded for a 1.0 lesson, lets talk. You want to talk about policy and procedures that change on knee jerk reactions because some students just can't be trusted to use adult judgement, lets talk.

My time as a student and instructor at UND were far from perfect. Most of the problems I encountered though were of my own making. If you show up to work and stop worrying about what stupid little dive bar you are going to go to for martinis or what no name band you are going to skip a final exam for to go see in the cities, things actually work out pretty well. If you want to have the "college experience" and drink yourself into oblivion, blow off class, chase skirt, drive like an idiot, and steal nickel trophies, go for it. Don't complain about the results though, you get exactly out what you put in.

Let us examine where challenger fails in getting his ideas across; thus, resulting in these continuous and counterproductive arguments.

PART ONE: HYPOCRISY

the teachers were also lacking in teaching skills.

dealing with bumbling administrators and professors who acted like they were on a different tier of civilization than you.

People from UND really seem to have a backwards way of thinking....

insulting the persons character, how mature does that seem?

PART TWO: SUBJECTIVITY

Even my Aviation teachers never showed that they truly cared about my future or career goals.

I have learned more in less than a half a semester at my current school, than I did at UND in 3 semesters.

UND has a good marketing ploy, but is not all that it is cracked up to be.

People from UND really seem to have a backwards way of thinking....

UND Aerospace has been on a decline in the past decade in quality from what people I have talked to have said....

PART THREE: BASHING

The classrooms on the lib ed side, were old and tired and the teachers were also lacking in teaching skills.

Even my Aviation teachers never showed that they truly cared about my future or career goals.

UND has a good marketing ploy, but is not all that it is cracked up to be.

dealing with the bumbling administrators and professors who acted like they were on a different tier of civilization than you.

(learn to spell if you want to insult someone and make up something about them being lazy without even knowing them)

NOTES:

1. This is not a bash on challenger; it is a critique for improvement.

2. The above quotes are, for the most part, what I believe lead to arguments which, subsequently, lead to challenger getting bashed by others.

3. UND is not "invulnerable to criticism" when the above quotes are not used to criticize UND due to their obvious faults.

You know, I didn't see any unnecessary name-calling and bad-mouthing about UND, Grand Forks and North Dakota in his posts, so I'd say that's definitely a good improvement from before.

Well, I'm definitely the idiot, now. :D
