Written exams expiration

I understand that when you take your FOI and CFI written it will expire in 24 months if you do not go ahead and complete the checkride. What if you complete the FOI, CFI written and then the AGI together. You would then have your AGI certificate for ground instruction (which seems to be a completely different certificate than the actual CFI)? I realize it would be limited to ground instruction.
My idea is if it took a while to get to the actual flying portion and check ride would the 24 month expiration rule still count for the written tests or would having the AGI certificate still be good? Does it expire? Thanks in advance for the help.

You could get it to teach on the ground while you work on the CFI, but you have to find somewhere that would allow that to happen, because especially for primary students, the ground is usually the instructor that handles it. If you can find a place that does little ground schools (which I very much love!) for multiple students at once, that would be a lot of help and good for you as well! Lots of different people with lots of different learning styles.

As far as if the AGI expires, don't quote me on it, but I don't believe it does. And yes the AGI is totally separate from the CFI and you don't need the AGI to be a CFI unless you plan on being gold seal.

To me it seems that the AGI/IGI are there for people to teach who don't have a CFI. They don't even have to be pilots. I'm not exactly sure why they exist, but they sure can help you teach students before your CFI, I might do that because money might make the CFI take longer than I expected...

Time and money is the reason I am considering this. I have taken the FOI and hope to soon be taking the CFI written and I thought if I went ahead and got the AGI at least that much would be accomplished. Then as time, work, money permits I could later finish my CFI. I would hate to take the written tests now and then get delayed before the flying/checkride and have to take all the tests again. Would having the AGI prevent this when it came check ride time even if it had been more than 24 months?

the CFI still expires in 24 months AGI or not. So pretty much what you can do is the AGI and teach while you work on the CFI. when you are almost at the checkride time, take the CFI written.

61.217 covers it. it never expires but you need another instructor to check up on you if you haven't taught within the last year. it's pretty simple wording which is rare for an FAR but I don't think there's a lot of room to play with.

So no, the AGI/BGI/IGI won't expire as long as you instruct. If you don't, you just get a signoff from another instructor and you'll be good to go.

Which leads me to this: If we both get an AGI, I get mine today you get yours in 1 month. 12 months from now, I take a signature from you to renew mine since I didn't instruct. 1 month later, you take a signature from me since you didn't instruct.

We can both never instruct but can we both be current forever theoretically? I guess it's just a technicality...

61.217(b):.."received an endorsement...certifying that the person has demonstrated satisfactory proficiency..."

but that's up to the guy giving the endorsement to interpret.

he can just say: well this guy is my buddy, I'll just sign it and not waste anybody's time

not saying it's right, or that I'd do it, but that's what can be done

Interesting? I was hoping that if I got the AGI now I would at least be done with the written tests whenever I later worked on the CFI portion even if it is more than 24 months. I realize there is little chance to work as a ground instructor right now even with an AGI. That is ok. I just wanted to make a little progress toward the CFI now and didn't want to have to retake the written tests again later. Thanks.

Well you can take the AGI/IGI now and that'll never go away, and then take the CFI when you are almost near your checkride that way you know there's no way you'll need to retake it

Once you have the AGI, you will at least never need to take the FOI again. You also won't need to answer any FOI questions on your CFI-A oral...

hmmmmm

this sounds like I should do the AGI regardless of whether or not I plan to instruct ground prior to CFI or be a gold seal....

Shortening a notoriously long oral in exchange for a written? Sign me up

Actually the AGI does expire. I was looking at the 2010 FAR/AIM one day and saw all AGI expire on a certain date (I think March or May 31, 2012, but I'd have to look it up again ).

61.211 and on sort of talk about it, but they never mention a date or time just recent experience.

I can't really get my faraim and go look because I'm at work but if you can dig through there and find it I'd be grateful because now I'm curious!
I know it was a certain date because I wasn't expecting it. I asked my instructor about it, but he didn't know anything about it.

(I looked in the 2011, but couldn't find it. I know it was in the 2010 because I even found it two more times to ask my instructor about it. I don't have a 2010 though, it was at the school.)
