Just found this on YT and it fantastic. Hopefully one day I can bum/buy a ride on a C-97 before they're all gone.

C-97 is one of those birds where the FE has a HUGE instrument panel at his station. The FE is the one who actually starts the engines, with the copilot....as can be seen.....counting the prop rotations in order to get proper bearing lube and check the hydro.

Growing up in PHX, I can still vaguely remember going to the ANG tanker unit at KPHX and going to see their KC-97s they had at the time. And for the longest time, there was a C-97 flown by Mexico company AeroPacifico out of KTUS that used to haul fish around Mexico....used to see it flying all the time. Unfortunately, it was taken out of service a few years ago and scrapped on-site at TUS. I have personal pics of the scrapping operation somewhere here at home. The former Hawkins and Powers Aviation from Wyoming used a KC-97 as a forest firefighter too.

I would love to see those pics if you can dig them up... I think I may cry but still...

My father also told me that if the engines failed to start, someone would put a 12 guage shell somewhere in the engine to attempt a start.

Great airplane, great videos....however Al Gore would be pissed.

Screw 'em! The days of these smoke belching sky machines are long gone.

Since I can't edit my initial post...

"Just found these on YT and they are fantastic."
I hate internets ignorants. ;)

As for the shotgun shell, watch the ORIGINAL Flight of the Phoenix and you will see them doing cartridge starts.

As for the FE, an old FE told me once, "An FE on a jet who screws up can get you in trouble. An FE on a big recip who screws up can kill you." And many old FEs were not afraid to tell the Capt, "It may be your airplane but it's my engines."

That was a causal factor in the takeoff crash of an L-1049 Connie at KFFZ in 1975.
