Pot Farmin' Pilot

He was trying to beat the other investers. You know once it is fully legal in California (and its getting close) the rest of the country will do it. A lot of people wave their 4th admendment and have things in plan sight.

Elaborate on this thought. Why should the airline pilot not be doing this?

You know what I mean and if you're questioning me you obviously don't agree and just want to start a debate. Neither of us are likely to convince the other to change their mind, so lets just leave it at
And for the record, I would be for legalizing it and taxing the crap out of it if it wasn't clear that its obviously quite easy to get it through less than legitimate means.

I just don't think that its valid to say that pilots should somehow be held to a higher standard than 7-11 clerks, or that 7-11 clerks are somehow intrinsically less responsible than pilots. Different strokes for different folks and all that stuff, and I know I'm not likely to convince you of anything, but saying that we have a moral responsibility as pilots to hold ourselves to a more rigorous legalistic interpretation of the law than people in other, perhaps less prestigious, careers seems akin to placing pilots in a more "superior" subset of the human race, and given our track record, is a logical conclusion that I think is invalid. Or to put it another way:

It all has to do with the culture of the people. Marijuana itself is nothing bad there are many countries out there that have it legalized. This guy is going to do very hard time just for selling something that's legal other places. Maybe if he snitches he'll get off sooner.

I'm not in any way saying that our job is more important, or that I'm any better than someone who works at 7-11. One of my favorite cultures is Japanese culture because they acknowledge that everybody plays a role in society and that no matter your job you should do it to the best of your ability. I really believe that.

However, I'm looking at this from a purely logical standpoint instead of an emotional one. Regardless on how you feel about smoking/selling weed, its illegal. Someone who engaged in illegal activity on purpose either a) has a problem or b) takes unnecessary risks. These two qualities don't lead to the best workers. Heck, Alaska Airlines won't hire anyone who smokes because of this...and it has held up in court. While everyone should be held to a high standard, if someone messes up at 7-11 because of having a problem or taking unnecessary risks, worst case scenario...food poisoning maybe? But if that person is a pilot, the effects on the patrons of that business will have a much more negative effect...also in greater numbers.

So in the eyes of the law, no I don't think that one profession should be held to a higher standard. But I think the workers themselves should hold themselves to a higher standard.

Pot turns you into a maniac that rapes women for sport and kills men for the sheer blood lust. Everyone knows that.

Seriously though, don't regional pilots get "wiz quizzed" regularly?

That was actually from Michelle Pfeiffer. Lesson #2.

It happens, but in my pushing 3 years at mine I haven't had it done. Seen it done to others though.

Holy crap. Truck drivers get tested randomly by their companies very frequently. I imagine train engineers are up there too.

Maybe the regionals are afraid they'll lose all their pilots. :D

Why do you think 3 out 5 regional crews smoke and chew?:bandit:

So your saying if it were legal it would be OK?

I'll say it's okay. Because then he wouldn't be doing anything illegal right?

Flying while high = bad. Legally smoking pot in your personal time when you're not flying or before flying? Not my business. Just like you drinking some brandy isn't my business either, as long as you fly safe. If you brew your own beer it doesn't make you a bad person, just a person that likes beer.

That is exactly the same belief which I hold. IMO, it is not as harmful physically or emotionally or domestically as alcohol, so why not let people smoke it? It's not like it is crack cocaine... so if the people want it, let em have it... Hell, if we legalized it and simply placed a massive sin-tax levy on it, we'd cut into our national debt in no time flat!!!:bandit:

Speaking of flying "High", I knew a kid when I was Freshman at Daniel Webster (1977) who -always- lit up a doobie for a few hits before every flying lesson.

I once asked him why, and didn't it affect his reaction time, etc. He said no. He said it calmed him down and he "flew better" with a buzz on.

Well...after about 2 months this kid had well over 20 hours...and still had not been signed off for his solo!! I don't know if he ever did solo! Too funny. But he did know all the words to every Greatful Dead song and was always giving me a hard time because my record collection was full of bands like J. Giles, Led Zeplin and Aerosmith, no Greatful Dead.
