Shirts and epaulets

Anybody have any guidance on where an oafish gorilla such as myself might procure a pilot shirt that actually fits? I've got a big neck and a pronounced V-shaped upper body. As in NFL lineman shoulders that eventually taper down into a 34" pant size. I'm currently wearing a "tapered" shirt from one of the big-name suppliers, and their 17.5 neck shirts (the smallest size I can wear with a tie and not choke to death) were apparently designed to go on somebody shaped like a bottom-heavy pear. To say it fits like a tarp does not adequately convey the degree of jackassitude involved. Anybody have a manufacturer that can help, or am I just going to have to bite the bullet and go with a tailor once I finally have some disposable income? I can look like an idiot just fine on my own without this circus tent helping out.

I haven't had much luck with tailored shirts either. Having a 20.5 lineman neck the body of my shirts is huge too. I just take them to my local taylor and he custom tailors the sides and sleeves for 10 buck a shirt.

Re: Shirts and eplates

Holy cow! I am 6'0", 170 lbs. The tapered Pilotshirts.com shirt fits me as though it were custom tailored. How skinny are you??

Not skinny at all, really. I've just got bigger shoulders/neck and a not so big waistline.

Bite the bullet. I do. I have an 18" neck 48-50" chest and 34" waist so I feel your pain. I just make sure the neck fits and get all of them tailored. In the end comfort is the main thing and I don't mind spending and extra 10 bucks for a comfortable shirt. Considering how much you are in it.

Re: Shirts and eplates

You flying contract for them? I just submitted my app last week (had someone walk in my resume too). Not sure if I'm terribly interested in going to work for them, but it never hurts to see what they're about. Hear any good/bad? PM if you'd like.
If you can get by the 2 year training contract and 1 year seat lock (and additional training contract if you switch types or upgrade after that 1 year), the horrible pay (I know what Beecrave's pilots were making and they had to take a CUT in pay to match MSD's pay) and the way the company is operated, go for it.

Me? I'll stay a contract pilot. Where, I can (and frequently do) tell the higher-ups to pound sand...and I make more as a contract pilot than their Hawker pilots were making before the pay cut. I'll buy my own health insurance for a fraction of what they offered it.

My recommendation would be to avoid it.

...or don't, so I can have your job! :D

Melta Snare Delete. The artists formerly known as BeeCrave.
Still two companies, but the geniuses at BC are apparently running the show at MSD now.

...I don't know how things were before the assimilation, but you can tell who's "in charge".

I appreciate the info. The training contract and $40k/year starting pay (blech, BLECH) didn't sit right with me. Thanks for reinforcing what I already was having a bad feeling about.

Looks like I'll just continue to bide my time here and wait for my turn on that big shiny turboprop.

Check out www.acutaboveuniforms.com

They specialize in tapered, better fitting shirts. They have measurement charts that help you find out which shirt is best for you.

I ordered a long sleeve that had sleeves too short- an exchange was absolutely hassle free.

I highly recommend this vendor. I'm not exactly the cover model on Men's Health but I have a problem similar to you- this place was able to get me a shirt that didn't feel like I was wearing a tent. The company stock stuff always did.

Sorry we missed each other today...I understand I need to talk to you about doing some aerobatic flying after fire season..

Unless you are flying corperate or airline, i think wearing the pilot shirt with a tie and bars on your shoulders look silly. Especially if you are instructing on a piston pounder.
Just my oppinion.

What if you're flying airline in a piston pounder? :D

I agree. I am always amuzed by the CFI that steps out of a C172 with 4 bars, gold wings, tie and name tag. I don't blame as he is just following policy. The uniform of that caliber is over kill at the CFI level. Just let them wear some dess pants, dress shoes, and a golf shirt.

Then there's DPFS

Dirty piston freight syndrome.

I miss frieght. :(
