Delta and MD-90

I saw a plane in China Eastern colors on its way to Atlanta from China on a ferry flight. The pilot told me Delta purchased the aircraft. Is the MD-90 replacing the DC-9's?

As far as I know they are just adding more MD-90s and not replacing anything.

We had one of the MD-90s come through Anchorage a while back.

Yeah, as far as I know, they are doing exactly that. I've heard there are quite a few of them in GSO getting outfitted and prepared for service, but I don't know anything for sure. Wouldn't surprise me to see them end up with all of the remaining MD-90's worldwide (minus the 27 specially equipped for the Saudi's)

Not necessarily, from what I understand about the MD-90 is that you can fly transcon from MSP and carry roughly the same pax load as an A320. The A320's can be better suited to fly longer transcons from ATL/NYC/SLC.

This seems like a play out of the former NW playbook, buy MD-90's for cheap (or cheaper than a new 737-800/A320) and fly the same # of pax for roughly the same fuel burn.

Delta is going to put AVOD and Wifi on the MD-90's, so I'm guessing they'll be around for a while.

I've always enjoyed flying on the MD-90, great riding airplane!

I used to commute on the MD-90s all the time to CVG out of SLC/DEN, and they were definitely more comfortable to ride on than the 757/737s.

I was riding on American a while back and the capt told me the lease on a maddog was 6k a month, whereas a new 73-8 was 250k a month. I don't know what the difference is between the super-80 and the 90 but it gives a little perspective on how allegient has been so successful.

I'd ride on an MD-90, in any seat, transcon if they had the range. The 737, 757 and Airbii are teeeeeeeeeeeeeerrible.

Here's my a.net moment:

MD90>319/320>757=737

I'd take the cockpit jumpseat on an A320 over any seat on an MD-90 or the 757 perch seat any day of the week, and twice on Sundays.

We had a few Allegiant guys jumpseat on us up to Bellingham, WA...that's what they all said.

Once they're paid for, that can start making $$$.

Funny, DAL has a whole fleet of DC-9-30s that are paid for languishing in the desert sun, while DCI runs around in spendy new birds while DAL pays for the fuel.

Thinks that make you go hmmmmm....

I rode on an ex-Song 75 from ATL-DEN three years ago and it was pretty comfy (it was actually still in the pink Song livery). The seats felt wider to me for some reason.

Are there any of those still kicking around?

All of them. I fly them quite often.
