Calling it Quits to Aviation as a Profession!

Well, i thought i'd never be sitting here typing this, but after some LONG mediation and lots of thinking, i've come to the realization that aviation as a career isnt going to work out anymore for me.

I've learned from my current job (Ramp - Skywest) that I just dont do so well working for other people. I do my job, and do it mighty fine without complaints and i've never been labelled "that" guy, it's just a personal conflict. Now while working the ramp is definitely not doing ATC, I just seem to find my niche in our family business. Business is really picking up for us, and I want to be part of the uprising of a hopefully successful future.

I've decided I'm going to branch out of the restaurant, and get into the catering division. We seem to fit a certain market in my area and surrounding areas that it only makes sense to tap into it. So while i've invested some time, money, and sweat into Aviation, i guess i just wont be calling it my job, and it'll still remain my hobby/passion.

I think I will forever wonder what it would of been like to be a controller, but I think my pursual of getting my PPL will help overcome that!

I want to give a BIG THANKS to everyone on this forum who has allowed me to grow as much as I have and come to terms with being happy in all aspects of life. For me right now, it's making money and enjoying time with the family!
 
Enjoying time with family is more important than the money in aviation. This is true because the more time your spending with your family, the more happier you will be.

Aviation is very sore and unforgiving. I really don't have to go back to the airlines if they call me back because I like being home with my family.

Besides, you'll love aviation more when your away from it.

This is so true. I've been away from aviation for a while, and I'm really starting to miss it. I hope you have looked long and hard into this, and considered all alternatives. I hope you've made sure that aviation is really something you would be OK giving up.

Good luck to you! I remember the food you brought to the meet'n'greet at Alteon and it was great; I'm sure you're catering business will be a huge success.

I have considered multiple alternatives and in all honesty, ATC was the 'alternative.' It woulda let me been involved with aviation without having to be gone from home, but I wont be happy working for anyone but myself. I dont plan to give up aviation in all, but just give up the job aspect of it. Besides, i get to live through everyone on this forum!

If I play my cards right, I could very well one day come here asking for suggestions on planes to buy!

Aviation is so multi-factied that you can find your niche in a lot of ways. Maybe you'll be the guy who CFI's locally part time. Or maybe you'll be the guy at the local EAA chapter that gives Young Eagle rides. Who knows. Everybody has a part to play if they seek it out and don't give up.

Actually no, I've gone part time, and will continue to ride the job out for as long as possible simply for the flight benefits. I think i'd get a beating from the family if they lost their flying benefits!:D

It may not be much, at first, and it may not be all that you expected, but it is available if you are persistent work hard, network, don't burn bridges, have the physical prowess and ability, and, did I say network? Oh yeah one more thing....NETWORK!
Timing helps some and hurts others, but persistence overcomes that eventually.

Again...for some...I know more than a few people who keep getting cut off (furloughed) as their career shows signs of advancing only to start at the bottom rung again. I am sure there is "money" to be had, but for some the necessary amount of work as well luck is just not worth it in the end.

You got it. The ones who made it big in aviation (from whom I know of in my pool of people I know) are the ones who worked the hardest and longest. They reaped the fruits of their labor and tough times. There are others even outside of aviation whom you see ride out hard times for years, and finally make it. They are inspiring for me. Good luck to ya man, you know what's best for yourself. I know I can't stand to be around my family much, aviation makes that work :)
