Keep it Professional....

No different than the USAir flight I followed out of EWR one day who insisted on calling himself Cat-Piss.

Here's a twist on the concept.

I was in ORD the other day, and according to a few pilots in the crew room, it's ATC taking a poke at a new rival.

Eagle pilots have long tenure in ORD and many have personal friendships and relationships with the Tower types. While, minus a minority of idiots here and there, Eagle pilots have been nice to the newly arrived American Connection fliers, the ATC contingent has been slyly taking pokes at them.

Allegedly, in a somewhat blatant, obvious tone, Chatauqua is being mis-pronounced as "Sh**tauqua".

I know the Connection pilots aren't entirely thrilled to be in ORD and the Eagle pilots aren't really thrilled to see them there, but the fact that ATC is broadcasting this negativity seems largely inappropriate.

I heard this from an ASA guy just yesterday waiting on our gate.

Ground: "give way to the blue tailed ERJ then taxi to the gate"
ASA: "give way to Shiiiiiitaqua and then to the gate"

I laughed and the CA didn't pick up on it but its just humorous that some of these guys really think anyone cares. Then I called him Gaycy. I kid I kid but really do people really go home and sleep better because they called someone a witty derogatory call sign? "Yeah I got them good I called Shiiiiiitaqua hahahahah they're hurting now!!"

So normally I would not make a stink about this. But recently in CLT there has been a larger amount of Air Wisconsin crews in and out of CLT..... Today was the second time, in a 2 day period I heard the same pilot get placed behind Brickyard (Republic). And for the second day in a row, when asked by tower if they had the "EMB170 in sight" the response was, "Dickyard, I mean Brickyard in sight." Regardless of how we feel towards a group, we should remember on a frequency such as those monitored by the FAA and in general we should keep it professional.... I just found it really shocking to hear it for a 2nd day in a row.... And what appeared to be the same pilot..... My jaw actually dropped as I looked at the Captain and he just gave me a nod as to say, "Yes he did just say that."

Ok rant over....

ps... I'm sure people at my airline have done the same.... By no means am I saying this is one particular airline....

They probably called the AWAC crews the same when they bought the Mesa US flying. Or when Skywest bought the United flying, or when Mesa displaced AWAC out of ORD, or when ASA displaced MESA out of IAD. goes on and on, but taking it over the radios is a little extreme.

Does the American flag on B2 in DTW signify anything? We just started flying into there and was curious. I know what the flags represent in BOS but wasn't sure in DTW.

Children and their neener-neeners, I suppose. As an Eagle guy, it's nice to know that we have friends in the ATC community that 'feel our pain' in a sense, i.e., but I don't think that sort of expression of it is at all constructive.

On the flipside, "Chatauqua" is fun to say. Heard a CHQ pilot and Boston controller hamming it up with the amusement of the correct word one day.

Alas, I take no joy in remembering how to spell it. Oy vey.

Hmm, I'll go out on a limb and say that with my combo Wisconsin/Chicago accent when I say "Chautauqua" it starts with a "sh" sound and ends "itaqua". Not any insult meant, it's the accent.

Yeah thats why you never know if its on purpose or just how they say it. Usually when they let the iiiiiiiit roll you get the point.

From the stories I've heard, it's apparently somewhat blatant. Granted, my sources were all second-hand.

I just spent the past 5 days sitting in crew rooms trying to separate fact from fiction. It's possible that this is just overinflated fiction... but...

... I also know my Beagle brethren well, and I wouldn't put it past them to rattle the cages of their believed tormentors, even by proxy. It bears examination.

It started off flying into MSP...

The latest one was originating out of LIT...

Little odd, don't you think?

Yeah, I operated that one out of MSP. If I was more superstitious, I might have tried to change it to something like 701A. I was under the impression once something catastrophic happened, the flight number went away at that airline. Since it was declared pilot error and enough time has passed, game on I guess. Then again, it could be a Delta thing and they aren't even thinking about it.

:laff: Yeah, give some of those guys a can of gas, and they'll go looking for a fire to throw it on.

I suppose it's pretty obvious with the extended "iiiit" or a pause between the first two syllables.

People are always telling me I talk funny no matter what I say... :D

Yeah, but it's what you say, not how you say it. That's why we love ya. :)

The occasional mis-pronunciation of my "CHAUTAUQUA" call never bothered me. Most people can't say my last name, and it only has 6 letters. Two of which are the same.

Miami did have the habit of calling us "Chotsky"...I guess IBT had a similar code. I was at the merge in MIA one day. ATC kept calling a chotsky 6xxx, so I kept looking for a metro. Had he done "CHQ" I would have moved.

The only thing I found un-professional were the following:

After calling, I'd hear a whispered "SCAB" in IAD.....

Oh, the best? Taxiing out, and having mainline (20 yr-ish) seniority guys flipping the bird from a company with a blue and grey paint scheme. It's one thing if only the cockpit crew can see it, but when you do it so all the pax can see it...that exudes class.

Oh well...back to off days.
