lol me too! He is gone for sure. I doubt the State department will ask Qatari government for a waiver, but it can happen. The purpose of DI is to avoid a tit for tat politically motivated stuff, not deliberate disregard of just and common laws. He will for sure be given persona non grata status at the least. What a fool, and what's up with detaining the other poor passengers for an hour? Another bumbling of the Tubstacking agency keystone (non)cops. What a joke.

What I really like is the doofus who says, hey, this response was just fine.

"None of this is going to be taken as anything less than dead seriousness," ABC News aviation analyst John Nance told "Good Morning America" today. "If you make the wrong comment at the wrong time and you're going to come off the airplane in chains."

"If this was an overreaction, it was not only an understandable one, it was a good one," Nance said.

Give me a break. Use some judgment.
 
How is the guy who snuck a smoke NOT the bad guy here, and how is it that most of this thread makes it seem as though the TSA was in the wrong? I understand that TSA is generally a pain, but I don't understand how it isn't the guy who decided to smokes fault.

You had 9-11, Richard Reid, the underpants bomber - all leading to this. The guy smoked on a plane - but you can certainly understand the concern given the recent events. I understand the frustration with TSA and the inefficiency, and I also hate how we have become such a fearful nation - but this guy decided to smoke on the plane, broke the law and created this mess. Why is HE not the bad guy, and why don't we send Qatar the bill for the massive response?
 
He'll recieve a Hero's welcome on his return to Qatar and make assloads of money on speaking engagements throughout the middle east.
Most likely will have more virgin wives than Ahmid the Suicide Bomber

This is the salient point here.

Presumably, because he is diplomat, he is familiar with aviation regs. This wasn't out of ignorance. The guy willfully broke the law, on an airplane, in a country which he KNOWS is already sensitive to airline security. And if that wasn't enough, when questioned, he had to be a jerk about it.

Personally, I think the State Department oughta declare him persona non grata and send him home. In the diplomatic bag.
