Yesterday me and my air carrier aircraft systems class took a trip to FlightSafety international at Laguardia airport to get a chance to fly the Beech 1900C full motion simulator. Wow! What an experience!!!!! To hear those turbines whine up as I brought the power levers forward and the satisfying roar of reverse props on touchdown, and the added affected of lunging forward in your seat too. I can safely say that was by far the best experience of my three years at this school.

Glad someone enjoyed the "Humiliator". Every time I see that thing, I have flashbacks of "ENGINE FAILURE, MAX POWER, PROPS FORWARD..."

All I can think of is Craig saying "left engine flame out. STOMP ON THE RIGHT SIDE, PUT IT RIGHT IN THE BARS, RIGHT IN THE BARS, RIGHT IN THE BARS...."

One of the scariest experiences I had in my aviation career was in a simulator where the computer went crazy. The sim started going crazy for no apparant reason (metroliner sim) and my instructor started yelling obscenties followed by the: "spread your legs!!!!" The stick pusher started going then flying back at my crotch fast repeatedly. My instructor tried hitting the emergency stop and that didn't do anything. We crashed so hard it knocked panels off the sim and it took them a few hours to get it back together. I hate simulators.

spread your legs? i woulda said lock em like a clam. Last thing i woulda wanted to do was open em up for the shaker right to the nutz.

I think that yoke would break a kneecap. The stick will actually hit the seat and nothing else if you spread your legs, but it was pretty intense. Once the sim crashed all the computer techs came running to make sure we were ok... they said they'd never seen anything like it.

If your kneecap broke during training, you could probably sue for $1,000,000.

The feel and sounds of the simulator is incredibly "digitally desensitized" compared to the real thing.

If that excited you that much, I recommend trying to get a gig flying the real deal some day. It's even better. :)

Reminds me of the time when I had runaway trim with the AP on so I caught it late(no one catches it with the AP on unless you're expecting it). But anyways, I got it to stop barely at the limit and I was pulling so hard I made the yoke buckle and it made a very loud noise I thought I just snapped the yoke off. the sim just froze and reset. the insuctructor was laughing and said it's supposed to do that at a pre determined stress level so the yoke doesn't break! I thought I just broke a 30mil sim!

That is a freaking wild story man. How long did that go on?

I've seen sims do some REALLY weird and sometimes violent things. The sim we usually use is fairly predictable and usually only has small squawks, some of the contract sims we use have gone ape you know what and it's been so bad I couldn't reach up to turn off the motion. One sim in particular started going full deflection up and down and threw me so badly I couldn't reach the motion button so had to hit the emergency off. It went on for about 30 seconds and I felt like Bruce Willis in an action flick trying to reach for the magic button to prevent the world from ending while the clock was counting down. I was on my hands and knees and everything, I think the students were scared out of their minds as I was laughing and yelling obscenities trying to reach that emergency shutoff. We ended up getting stuck and the protocol for the sim center was to get the fire department to come and have us get down using a ladder. Good times!
