took off at khie enroute to kbtv. about 200' or so left engine starts sputtering & shaking violently. had a 9000' rpm drop, all engine gauges in the green. hit my single engine speed & circled back. rate of climb was about 75 fpm, if that.

long story short, i live to tell the tale. im guessing a mixture problem, but i'll have to wait till tomorrow to see the results. oh, and it was a beech duchess with about 18,000 hrs on the frame. :banghead:

Great job recovering and bringing it back for a safe landing. A pilot always have to be persistent and expect the unexpected.

Thumbs up!

9000 foot RPM drop? Some fancy Duch-ass you've got there. ;)

Just kidding. Nice work. I've had a couple rough engines in a 402. Definitely makes your radio voice go up an octave or three. :D

9000' RPM drop? Must be a turbine powered Dutchess!

Seriously, glad you handled it well and lived to tell the tale!

Not supposed to. Maintaining sounding cool on the radio, is the next item after "maintain aircraft control"

Haha! In the few truly intense moments I've had in my flying career, I'd be lying if I said I didn't consider, at least for a split second, what my voice was going to sound like on the tapes.

lol as you can tell im still a bit in shock, and counting my blessings.

lets make it 2700 rpm at normal take off, and it was showing 1800 rpm (give or take, not like i was staring at the dam thing.)

See? I told you. It's true, whether we want to believe it or not. :D

None of us ever wants the "witness" who was in another plane and heard the exchange on the radio....as he's being interviewed by the media, to be saying:

"...yeah, that pilot did an awesome job of recovering the airplane. I heard the whole thing on the radio."

Reporter: "How did he sound? Did he seem concerned? We all remember the Sully ATC tapes and he sounded....."

"No, he was screaming like a girl, actually...."

:D

Good job, I had the same thing happen to me in a Duchess here in Ft. Pierce a while back. At about 800 ft and RPMs dropped out and the engine started shaking. I looked at my instructor.... he looked at me... and then he said "I didn't do it":D. Needless to say we turned around and landed with my best airline captain voice:rawk:
