There are more parallels to aviation than I thought. I was reading a thread on a LEO forum about criminal justice degrees and they same the same stuff people on here say about aviation degrees.

I'm not surprised, cops can be just as opinionated as pilots

My sister graduated with a criminal justice degree in May. The only job she got a return call on was to be a delivery helper for UPS around the holidays.

Next week I'm heading to the Detroit police recruiting station and putting in an application there. If you can serve (survive) two years there than I know the cheif of Police personally in the hometown I grew up in.

I waited a bit over a year but that was a long time ago! Don't think that has changed much, there are a few BP agents on here with a little more recent experience in the waiting period.

It took me exactly 5 months from test date to receiving the call for the academy (two weeks later). From what i saw, i was some sort of miracle. Most wait times after around a year to a year and a half with the southern border waiting much longer than northern border.

I waited in tsu for 10 days when the average was 90-100 days. I also came in over the summer when there was 100 interns (two classes of 50) coming to the academy a week. Now its down to one class of 25 a week with maybe a class of 50 thrown in maybe once a month to every two months.

Its a great gig. Pay is amazing (gs-12 within 3ish years!!), you work outside all day, and its fun work too.

So with an LEO position there is 25% increase on top of the grade scale pay? What about per diem rates for the last few years you have been at the southern border? How does that figure into the pay?

I would love to stay down on the southern border. The southwest is my favorite. But I cant seem to convince my whole family to pick up and leave on account of me. So I'm stuck working in Detroit whether its with BP or something else.

Back in the old days....God I use to hate that saying We didn't even dream of going to the northern border in less than about 5 to 10 years. I was one of the exceptions, but as in many cases its who you know, I got a non-paid transfer to Spokane after about three years, mostly because the CPA knew me from my deputy sheriff days working with the Patrol at the Oroville WA Station.

It also helped that most of the more Senior PAs wouldn't take a non-paid move. Took a lot of crap for that, but I was headed to the northern Border and they were not:tease:

The 25% add on is called Administratively Uncontrollable Overtime. (AUO). For each pay period you have to work 20 hours extra on top of your shifts to ma ke up the time thats required to cover during shift change, drive back to the station, take care of the vehicle or process some law breakers.

You receive per diem if you are assigned to an assignment away from your duty station. Usually this occurs when an agent takes a temporary assignment to a station that requires more agents, eg: tuscon because theres a lot of bodies and dope in that sector. The northern border interns are required to spend 10 months after the academy at a southern border station before returning to the northern border. Since the south is not their permanent duty station they receive per diem for lodging and food.

Can you say Boondoggle:bandit: Honestly though, you need that experience you get on the line. You'll get more experience in ten months working there, than working ten years on the Northern Border. That's uncommonly intelligent for the BP

They got rid of the 6 and 10 month boards, fairly recent change as I understand.

Maybe as a separating factor for candidates? Maybe they stole the application that another PD uses, and put their own PD name on it?

That's Bittersweet, I'm sure. The boards did serve a purpose, They used to use it to get rid of the slackers, if your evals sucked, or you didn't work on your spanish, you'd be gone.

But I new a curtain female Deputy Chief that sued the academy because she could get over the wall on the obstacle course and won her job back. You may have known her Mike (hint: at your last station)

What i heard from the older agents is that they sucked but looking back at them, they said they were beneficial.

Tucson is one of the places that was rid of them. Whether or not they're coming back I haven't heard, but our BORSTAR guys that ride with us had said they were no more. And to that, BORSTAR is getting rid of the tans and going to green utility uniforms, if they haven't already, apparently.

My spanish instructor (nogales agent) at the academy heard from his FTO that they're were thinking about bringing it back.

As for BORSTAR going to green?!?! Kinda sad cuz tan just makes sense down on the southern border. not too much trees and grass to blend into down here.

Hell, some sector chief's in south TX won't even allow BORSTAR there to wear the tans, they have to wear the green of the standard agents. Of course, BOR doesn't have the presence in that region as it does in the Tucson sector and west.

As I remember, after doing a couple of hours of dragging trails in Yuma you were kind of a dark sand color anyway

This is the type of stuff that bugs the crap out of me when it comes to law enforcement. You generally have a great group of ground-pounders trying to make it work, and then admin pukes who spend most of their day pontificating about what uniform is/isn't allowed.
