Typed in the B-727

How well do the winglets work on the 727? I know that Delta tested out a pair of winglets on the 727.

Like most true winglets, the savings were around 5-7% on fuel burn however the 727 was on the way out at Delta and the time to recoup the investment was reportedly not there.

Real winglets work. "Pretend-lets" are marketing gimmicks which impress the owner and new rampers... but little else.

They do save some on the fuel burn and time to altitude but you have to be doing some long legs to really see the savings in cruise. I have only seen a few 727's with them and they just don't look right on a 727 to me. I have also heard from the guys that have flown the winglets that it ads some more float to the landings.

Bandit Driver, anyone..

What is the sweep of the 727 wing?

The Boeing 737NG is swept at 25 degrees, for a top speed of .82, and a cruising speed of .78!

Wiki says the 727 has a top speed of .90 and a cruising speed of .81!

I guess I'm wondering if the wing of the current NG 737 was put on the 727, if it would be a better wing than current one, and still be as fast.

If wiki is right, me thinks, no!

Anyone have an idea hypothetically of course what kind of modern wing would best work for the 727 in todays world?

The Mmo is mach .90 Our normal cruise speeds are usually between mach .75 and .80. High speed cruise is mach .84 to .86.

Nope the 727's wing is an engineering masterpiece. It was engineered for both highspeed flight and low speed flight to get into and out of shorter fields. The amount the wing grows and changes shapes is amazing.

When I got on the TriMotor, our routine cruise was 0.86M. We climbed at 250 until 10 and then went to 320kts. We later backed it down first to 0.80 and eventually to 0.78.

Good mentor when he retired was met by all his buddies with little 'crickets'. Ab, my mentor, used to say, "We got nothing to sell but speed so we may as well sell as much as we can." He was always up against the barber pole.

As for the wing, Boeing reportedly said they were NEVER again build so complex a wing.

On final.. "Gimme 50% wing disassembly!":D

Reminds me of the cool video of the United 727-100 doing the short-field landing into Meigs for delivery to the Museum of Science and Technology in 1992.

I sat in the jumpseat once in a 727 with the MD80 engines (Super 27 mod) and it was like they were trying to cage an angry mountain lion on the climb. It just wanted to burst free and climb forever, not even close to full power.

I do remember vividly the short-field landing of the 727 at meigs, i used to go there in my younger days and hang out & watch planes land, amazes me about the landing, but its prob not the plane or airport, but the size of the nads! Oh yeah, i almost forgot, thanks again Daily about the airport!

And just think, this plane was built with a drafting table and slide rule...

Here's some random 727 pic for you...

Is there still any chance to fly the 72 these days? It seems that Capital and Kalitta etc have very few openings. Anyone know who Phoenix East's 'infamous' internship 727 FE/FO program grads get sent to?

Alex.

The 727 is a dying breed. I was very fortunate to get a direct hire to the right seat with no time on the aircraft. I don't anything about Phoenix East but if it involves paying your way into the seat then it isn't a good deal. CAT (custom air transport) did that.

To my knowledge most companies want time in type to get hired or previous heavy FE time. Getting in can be tough but it can be done.

The FE position is a great way to learn the plane, but you will need to fly on the side to keep up your instrument skills. Just don't buy your job.

I didn't do CAT because of the PFJ. I hoped to keep the bird for flying on the side. That and still use my degrees.;)

Almost wish I did it now.....
I need a drink....or two....or three....well you know where I am going.

Not a problem. The FE position is the hardest working position in the 727. The FE can make or break the crew. If you really want to do the FE gig go take the FE TurboJet written and start beating down some 727 operators doors.
