Captains second hand smoke is killing me...

I can get behind that explanation! I was addicted to cheeseburgers, and fries. I had to really work to break myself of that habit so that I may have better health as I get older. I know you love corndogs:)

See, that's the easiest and most sensible response! It's because people enjoy it! They enjoy loaded baked potatoes, and fried cheese sticks, and bacon!

And, I'll take a good corndog over a cigarette anyday!

This thread starter reminds me of a story my dad always used to tell me about at Southern Airways.

He was flying with a captain that wouldn't stop smoking in the cockpit. So my dad walked off the airplane at an outstation and said "either you stop smoking with me in the cockpit, or you call crew scheduling and find a new FO here."

He stopped smoking in the cockpit....

The difference is, a non-smoker sitting next to you is not emitting a noxious chemical (normally). A smoker, by merely enjoying his/her habit is, in fact, emitting a noxious chemical. For some people cigarette smoke feels like an assault of the senses.

Putting aside the often overemphasised health risks, the mere fact that you can do something to me physically which is against my will is a violation of my rights.

yeah well back in the day of smoking and non sections in restraunts I was in the smoking section when a guy at a table next to me said you have to put that out, I asked him why and he said it was his right to sit where he wanted and his choice was the smoking section so I had to put it out sinc e it is no a non smoking section as far as hes concerned, you know what I did right....:bandit::D....pfffffffffffffff...

Look I quit of my own accord and am glad I did, but I will side with a smoker everytime, I dont drink, but Im not out to outlaw beer, even though drunk drivers kill more people than second hand smoke, just show some courtesy both directions...

and I know smokers who insisted on smoking in the non-smoking section, because it's their right. Neither side was correct, so side with the side that's right, don't just pick smokers every time. If cigarette smoke didn't actually bother non-smokers, there would be no issue.

That's not really a fair comparison. Responsible drinking has no correlation with drunk driving. Just like the act of not sleeping has no correlation with tired driving, which is as dangerous as drunken driving. The very act of drinking (as long as it's not to excess) doesn't really effect people around the drinker. The very act of smoking effects everyone in the building. I know smokers don't really notice it, but if I'm in a restaurant that allows smoking (thankfully very rare these days) I have to change my clothes when I get home. It's obnoxious and unhealthy and the non smoker is getting absolutely nothing from it.

I agree with the previous poster, you have to be slightly brain dead to have started smoking after the 50s. All the health risks aside look what it does to your physical appearance. Smokers look old and washed out, in my experience they can't keep up in physical activities, they have more upper respiratory disorders. It doesn't sound like a very relaxing lifestyle to me.

I understand smoking pot, like drinking at least you get something out of it. Even an addiction to heroin, though not as good as the first time you can still get a rush. Smoking seems utterly pointless to me though. You're not getting high, you're just feeding an addiction that you created. What's the point?

Get a whistle and blow it as loud as you can while he smokes near you.

Explain that if your second hand whistle noise bothers him, just think what his second hand smoke is doing.

He may rethink the second hand smoke is harmless thing when his ears are ringing.

How tight is the Captain with the owner of the a/c? If they are tight, you better walk gingerly around this subject, otherwise, you risk being fired.

Have you considered one of those small, hand-held fans?

Yeah, that wont make him look like a •!
:laff:

But seriously, I used to get a kick out of it when fat people told me to quit smoking because its bad for your health.

You know, I've been wondering about something. Maybe you guys can clear it up for me. How did the word "•" come to mean weak? You guys are so controlled by it and make some ridiculous life-altering decisions based on it---so what's with the negative connotation. Just wondering.....:dunno:

I think it has to do with both connotations of the word;

- Being a "'fraidy cat" as they said back in the day, and
- The Mad Men era thought of females being the weaker sex

Sort of the same way I'd tell another pilot to not let his skirt get all caught up in the rudder pedals if he was being weak about something.

It has nothing to do with the other connotation of the word relating to the female genitalia that men are slaves to.

Thank you, Hacker! I have many male friends and am always amazed (although I shouldn't be!) at how seemingly intelligent, successful men, both young and old, attach themselves to a high-maintenance, toxic female they KNOW is wrong for them. Is POP really that strong? :insane:

Entire industries have been created on it...powerful men have lost everything for it...a thousand ships have sailed for it (oh, wait, that was a face...but, you get the idea).

So, I'd say yes.

Either that, or the real "weaker sex" is the one that falls under the spell so easily.

So how's it going?

I have decided that the fight is not worth my job. The owner and CA are VERY CLOSE, and have had a professional friendship for about 10years. My measly 8months on property wont do anything. I haven't even gotten the annual invitation to the Christmas Party yet haha. After leaving SC on Sunday, and now sitting in Seattle till Thursday I had time to mention some things. But nothing more than what I have already stated before.

Yes, I have rights...the smoker has rights... but our rights should not interfere with each other, and I am not in a position at this time to challenge those rights. I love my job too much to let an increased risk of cancer stop me from quitting... (Yes that is sarcasm)...

I only wish I had another option- but in this economy, I will for now keep my mouth closed and be thankful I have a job,- As i have seen many on here would GLADLY take my job because I complain about the smoke- So I will not mention anything more for now.

On a side note- I am so far impressed that this thread post has sustained life as long as it has. I half expected 5-10 posts of name calling and to get over it...

He's testing you. I have a close friend like this, he tested until I broke his nose. As he was there holding the broken beak he told me that all his close friends have broken his nose at one time or another. If I hadn't stood up for myself he and I probably wouldn't be friends as he wouldn't respect me. Your Captain is an old school kinda guy and would probably haze you if he could get away with it. If you pass the test he will probably be the best advocate for your career. There are just some guys out there like that. Good luck!
