Captains second hand smoke is killing me...

Ok, so i've been on the Hawker full time now since mid September...and the CA I fly with i believe is trying to kill me...

Reason I say this... is as soon as we get to the destination, he is non stop smoking. Im saying.. we get in the car and we are literally going 5 miles to the hotel. He will go through probably 3 cigarettes before getting into the car.. another 3-4 while enroute to the hotel in a matter of minutes.. and then before we go into the hotel another 1-2. Now, during outside car times, I do my best to stay way from the smoke as best as I can and i've voiced sometimes that the smoke is getting to me a bit.

But in the car... its VERY bad and sometimes hard to breathe. He is an older guy, and is stuck in his ways. Ive told him that the smoke bothers me but he doesn't seem to listen to it. I believe he is that addicted that he can NOT go a few seconds without having a smoke.

He is a great guy to fly with, a real pleasure to work with, and i say work with- because he truly does treat you like an equal. But when in the car on the way to downtime, its like Im not in the car and it doesnt matter what I say or do, he will always smoke and even yesterday I started to get a massive headache from all the smoke and there was nothing I could do.

I would like suggestions and comments or things I can do, that can safetly let him know that the smoke is really bothering me, but I DO NOT WANT TO comrpomise the mutal respect we have going. I would hate to piss him off after ive worked very hard to prove that I belong on that plane. He and I are the primary crew for it, however there are three other guys behind me if I get sick or stuck on a different trip or something like that - that can cover for me..

Id hate to say the wrong thing about the second hand smoke that would make him stop using me and start using the other guys cause I compalined about the smoke.. Anyone know where im coing from or have words of encouragement that can help?

Thanks guys!

You could always take up smoking yourself. The first hand smoke, and accompanying relaxation, would make you not mind the second-hand smoke so much maybe.

The next time he's smoking a cig in front of you take it from his mouth and break it in half right in front of his eyes. He'll respect the amount of balls you have and leave you alone.

Complain on the internet. Or roll down the window. Or get another job.

WOW you guys really think im completely dumb that i don't already have the WINDOW DOWN.. gimme a break guys...

never mind.. .mods.. DELETE POST- cause obviously SERIOUS helpful responses are not gonna happen

Notice all the "roll the window down" responses are from smokers.

I despise smokers that have no sympathy for those around them that they affect.

If somebody did that to me, I'd knock his teeth out.

Bad advice . . .

I kind of consider it basic good manners that if you're doing something that really bothers someone else, that you stop doing it around them.

I won't tell someone else not to smoke, but keep that garbage away from me. And if, for example, my perfume bothers you, I won't wear it any more when I'll be around you. If you don't like my music, I won't play it near you. I might spend only as much time with you as I absolutely have to, but I will respect another person enough to modify my behaviors/actions such that we can get along when we have to. I don't think that's asking too much.

Light matches in front of his face during an approach to minimums. Then say, "See how annoying that is? That's what I feel like every time you smoke."

Ok, but seriously now, a couple ideas....

Give it time. He's bound to respect you more the longer you fly with him.

Be more blunt. Lay it out for him, what you really think, even if it seems rude. Some people don't "get it" until you do this.

Offer to give buy him an electric cigarette to use when you're in confined spaces. http://www.e-cig.org/

A friend of mine swore by the e-cigs. She said it was just like smoking without the cigarette. Felt the same in her fingers, looked the same (complete with LED glowing butt), still had the nicotine, still had the vapor, etc. Just no nasty smoke smell, and could be used in non-smoking areas. If your captain really does want to be a nice guy but can't stop because of his addiction, this might get him through for a few minutes.

Rent two cars?? RIGHT- you know how expensive that is? Luckily EVERYTHING on my trips are paid for.. EVERYTHING... but i know they wont spring for two cars - just cause I don't like him smoking. HE would tell me to stop being a • and deal with it. Im tellin you guys.. this guy is hard core in his habbits, I just don't want health releated issues because... I..

-HAVE MY WINDOW DOWN- EVEN WHEN ITS 30 outside.... =(..

- CANT RENT A SECOND CAR- Cause the owner wont spring for it

or

- rip the cig out of his mouth - cause he would snap me like a twig...

so....

It's very disappointing that we can get along so well in everything we do, but his smoking habits is casting a HUGE shadow over the crew relationship....

I'm glad some people on here understand my view... and no I won't relax, cause I'm on my 5th night out of 7 on this trip and the smoke is driving me insane..... I can't quit cause I can't afford to, and I promise you if I wanted my own car id have to pay for it, and i cant afford that either.
