Captains second hand smoke is killing me...

Rent two cars?? RIGHT- you know how expensive that is?

- CANT RENT A SECOND CAR- Cause the owner wont spring for it

A compact car through an FBO can't be more than $40/day. If your owner can't spring for $40 a day in the interest of your long term health, then you need to ask yourself how important this whole thing is to you.

Have you had a sit-down with the owner? If not, I would suggest one. It should be a very easy conversation:

"Hey boss, I need to talk to you...yeah...I'm concerned about my health with all the second hand smoke from the captain smoking 6 ciggys in the car between the airport and the hotel...it's giving me headaches and it has followed me into the cockpit recently...would you mind if I rented my own car"

Light matches in front of his face during an approach to minimums. Then say, "See how annoying that is? That's what I feel like every time you smoke."

Ok, but seriously now, a couple ideas....

Give it time. He's bound to respect you more the longer you fly with him.

Be more blunt. Lay it out for him, what you really think, even if it seems rude. Some people don't "get it" until you do this.

Offer to give buy him an electric cigarette to use when you're in confined spaces. http://www.e-cig.org/

A friend of mine swore by the e-cigs. She said it was just like smoking without the cigarette. Felt the same in her fingers, looked the same (complete with LED glowing butt), still had the nicotine, still had the vapor, etc. Just no nasty smoke smell, and could be used in non-smoking areas. If your captain really does want to be a nice guy but can't stop because of his addiction, this might get him through for a few minutes.

Thanks for the advice on the Ecig. I'll ask him if he has thought about it when I get the courage and think I wont die when asking a personal question like that haha. You are right- the more I fly the more our crew style develops, and its a good thing no doubt, like I said...everything is great.. minus the smoke.. so...

LOL- lets just say.. ummm... I get only a very brief amount of time to see and talk to the owner due to the fact of who that person is. IF i were to do this, i would have to go through 2 secretaries to get face time with him lol. and im not jokin on that either... I will have to wait it out for awhile to be able to be credible enough to have time with the owner w/out the CA being there next to me as well. So that should explain to some people WHY this job is rockstar... and why I would not want to leave becuase of the smoking..

HENCE THE ORIGINAL POST as to WHY i came here and not to them to save face and get a more professional approach then jacking him in the face and throwing his pack out the window haha.

Yes- they are funny- but I was looking for serious responses as well..

Hope you don't ever want to fly for a frac. Pax can smoke in the airplane.

Why are you even asking here? You have three choices. Say something to him or suck it up or find a new job and let one of the thousands of unemployed pilots have yours. If he tells you to quit being a •, then you have two more choices. Quit being a •, or quit. It really is that simple.

Do you have to ride in the car with him? Is this just to grab a bite to eat? Id stick around the FBO, bring my own lunch, grab the crew car after he leaves. This sucks. Your in a junior position to him, and unfortunately you have to deal with it or look for something else.

I have the same issue. Two CEOs of two different companies, two secretaries, and two completely different schedules. It can be challenging.

You being the FO and all, I'm sure you have the honor of taking care of the bags before and after the trip...while the CA smokes a cigarette :laff:

That's when some of my best schmoozin takes place. Our home FBO has a LONG hall from the lobby to the parking lot, and I can get a lot done during that walk.

One word...SCBA!

Although it might not fit in the car. And they're expensive. And you might get looked at funny.

Or a HAZMAT air purifier might work too. :D

(I worked in oil/hazmat response, for those who think this post was weird)

First of all that's 3 choices not 2 since your being so critical of me - I will be of you as well. Second- IM ASKING for the same reason you are chastising me, because I WANT TO SAVE MY JOB and not come off as being ungrateful and get fired for an "attitude problem"

Rent two cars?? RIGHT- you know how expensive that is? Luckily EVERYTHING on my trips are paid for.. EVERYTHING... but i know they wont spring for two cars - just cause I don't like him smoking. HE would tell me to stop being a • and deal with it. Im tellin you guys.. this guy is hard core in his habbits, I just don't want health releated issues because... I..

-HAVE MY WINDOW DOWN- EVEN WHEN ITS 30 outside.... =(..

- CANT RENT A SECOND CAR- Cause the owner wont spring for it

or

- rip the cig out of his mouth - cause he would snap me like a twig...

so....

It's very disappointing that we can get along so well in everything we do, but his smoking habits is casting a HUGE shadow over the crew relationship....

I'm glad some people on here understand my view... and no I won't relax, cause I'm on my 5th night out of 7 on this trip and the smoke is driving me insane..... I can't quit cause I can't afford to, and I promise you if I wanted my own car id have to pay for it, and i cant afford that either.

Look, either it's important enough to you to quit your job over, or it's something that you deal with quietly. You need to decide which it is, then do what you have to do. If it is so important to you that you can't live with the situation, then the ball has to go into his court - he quits or you quit. If you're not willing to make that sacrifice, then I wouldn't recommend confronting him any further (assuming you really have asked nicely), because that will be one of the possible outcomes.

Do not, and I repeat, do not continue with the situation as it is now or it WILL affect your relationship in the cockpit eventually. If you decide that the job is more important than confronting him about the smoking, then you need to honestly treat the situation as one that has been resolved. You cannot afford to carry resentment and anger with you as a professional pilot.

You have to decide, then you have to live with whatever the outcome might be.

Oh by the way...life isn't fair.

Whatever. I'm retarded. Be critical of me all you want. :rotfl:

You're making too big of a deal out of it. If you can't talk to him about something so simple, what are you going to do if he does something unsafe or off the wall in the airplane? Let him and then complain about it on here?

Whenever I fly with someone that I have an issue with, I always try to bring it up in a humorous or lighthearted way if it's something that I feel really needs to be brought up.

If you are so sensitive to second hand smoke that it bothers you when even your window is open, you're in for a long career.

And no, I don't smoke. That crap costs money that could be better spent on beer.

I WANT TO SAVE MY JOB and not come off as being ungrateful and get fired for an "attitude problem"

So you're basically asking us for a magic way to be ungrateful without "coming off" that way? Seriously, what do you hope to accomplish on the internet? Your options are, as mentioned multiple times above, pretty limited. Do you want us to help you pick? Eeenie Meenie Miney Mo...

If it matters that much to you, refuse to get in the car next time. Complain to the owner. Quit. Whatever. If you quit, drop me a PM, I think I'd like to fly with this guy.

Start saving 5 dollars a day and....

At the very least the guy will get a kick out of it. You can go with cheaper options at home depot with little filters in them. Oh and here http://www.approvedgasmasks.com/sge-400-3.htm Only 165, a bit steep but that smoke will never bother you again. One request though, if you go this route please take some pictures.

Does anyone remember sitting in the smoking sections of a 121 flight? That was the life - enjoying a nice cocktail with a refreshing pack of cigarettes while on the flight from IAH-MCI. It was great. Really made traveling on the airlines tolerable.

I second that! :laff: In all seriousness, a little bit of humor seems the best way to solve the problem (pun intended).

Pardon my cynicism, but why don't you just BUY HIM MORE CIGARETTES?

Think of it as in investment in a quicker promotion to Captain.

"Have another smoke, Cap'n? Here you go- let me light it for you. Heck no, I don't mind. It's all part of my overall plan to make Captain in less than 2 years. Heck, I might even make Captain in mid-flight one of these days"
