Let's brighten up this forum a bit...

It is undoubtedly easier on the eyes to have a young, attractive flight attendant closing the door(s) :D . But, if that same person is whiney, inexperienced, expects the pilots to do everything for them, and needs a shoulder to whine on then I'd rather have a 50-something who's been here for 10 years and can handle their own back there. I can't stand it when some FA's act like they should be treated like their my daughter/girlfriend/wife etc....I'm not carrying your luggage up the stairs, don't care about the passenger who was mean to you, you're not senior to me because you've been at the company longer, oh the list could go on forever. One of the best FA's I had was a retired cop who was at a major for a couple years before coming to my regional for family reasons. He was great to get along with, knew what he was doing and did it damn well for being here less than a year....id trade a whiney 19 y/o for him any day!

Weird thing and this might, well, sound gay but, some of my most favorite FAs to fly with are the fifty-ish year old gay dudes that have been in the biz for a few decades. For some reason they always seem to bring a touch of class to the operation.

agreed!

Of all the recurring topics that for some reason insist on being repeated over and over and over again, I really hate seeing this one.

It's demoralizing. It really is. From my heart, here's how I feel: (And I'll preface this with this how *I feel*, it doesn't make anything right or wrong, it's just how I feel.) I really wish that people could lose the '60's stereotpye of "hot stews". There's so much more to the people who do the job [of F/A] than how they look. A great majority of the ones I worked with had college degrees, almost all had at least some college. Lots had previous careers and previous "lives" with lots of interesting & intelligent things to contribute. It just takes away from the "total person" to reduce a work group to "check out this airline's hott stews!"

So that's what I think...

They come of all backgrounds. In the last two months I've had past attorneys, business owners, nurses, etc. Then I've had the twenty something problem ones that try to dictate to the captain what's going to happen. Or the one that will act ghetto in front of pax, or the one who rolls her eyes as you give the crew briefing and try to keep it professional. I find a trend in that all these problem kids tend to be between the ages of 21-29. Gender doesn't really matter.

The top three fa's I've had thus far have all been gay men in their late forties early fifties. It is what it is.

There is a notable difference in the hiring practices of flight attendants at a certain low pilot paying A320 operator.

Discuss...

They'll go through teething problems soon. These hot young things are going to quickly find that by sleeping around their names get tarnished and the ball starts rolling. The company will get sick of the problems that are associate with their age group and start to hire different people.

Sorry, I too think airlines need to hire only beautiful-looking properly-sized and proportionate healthy 18-28 year old ladies.

Sigh...boys will be boys, Amber......
I think you overestimate how much attention is really paid to you and the importance of your job. BTW, the biggest critic of female flight attendants in every aspect I have seen was from female pilots. Me I could care less, just get the passenger count right and try to resolve conflict at the lowest level.

Personally, I could care less how attractive or unattractive they are. I've had male flight attendants that could charm a cabinfull of passengers in pretty tense situations and I've had attractive female flight attendants that made me want to stab my eyeballs out because of terrible attitudes.

And PDT has one. LGA based. Skinny. Wow she's hot......and a professional too.

You noticed huh! We have 2 or 3 new LGA based FAs that are really quite the lookers. I am not sure if that 3rd one I saw was based somewhere else and was just flying with an LGA crew due to being on reserve, but I was impressed. BT showed me an FA new hire photo and almost all of them were obviously chosen due to their good looks - how it should always be!

A-effin'-men.

All the VX F/As I see travel to and from work on Skywest/UA are almost always male, and almost always great people with a great sense of humor. They seem like a fun group.

Would guys be held to the same standard? :)

I think they should! Good looking, in excellent physical shape pilots and FAs hired and retained only. That will create an instant pilot shortage and get me an quick upgrade!

Is Narcissism disqualifying?

Narcissism...Down here in ATL we call it SWAG. Nope. In fact it's encouraged!

The term narcissism refers to the personality trait of self-love, which includes the set of character traits concerned with self-image or ego. The terms narcissism, narcissistic, and narcissist are often used as pejoratives, denoting vanity, conceit, egotism or simple selfishness. Applied to a social group, it is sometimes used to denote elitism or an indifference to the plight of others.
Freud believed that some narcissism is an essential part of all of us from birth.[1] Andrew Morrison claims that, in adults, a reasonable amount of healthy narcissism allows the individual's perception of his needs to be balanced in relation to others.[2]
While most people possess some degree of narcissistic traits, higher levels of narcissism can be dysfunctional, and may be classified as pathologies such as narcissistic personality disorder and malignant narcissism. Psychopathy, as defined by the PCL-R, also contains a narcissistic factor.[3]
