Possible Mid-Air over Hudson.

Question for those more knowledgeable: would ADS-B have helped to prevent this type of accident?

I realize fully that nothing is fool proof since fools are so clever. That said, assuming everyone is equipped, does ADS-B provide enough data to avoid a mid-air? I seem to recall that it helped reduce mid-airs in Alaska by a lot.

RIP to those involved.

I can't believe the accident is getting this much coverage. I too am frustrated with the inaccurate reporting on this.

I am disgusted by Fox news for posting the pictures on their homepage. You've lost my respect Fox. Condolences to the families.

Good! He deserves that.

He is one of the few people that if I met him, I would refuse to shake his hand. Purely a symbolic gesture, of course, but I will not shake the hand of someone who orders such a cowardly act of destroying an airport in the middle of the night.

I generally don't speak bad of people, but he's an ass.

:yeahthat:

Just a ticked off kinda glare is all he would get from me.

I would say that ADS-B may have helped the situation provided one of the aircraft was equipped. Flying in this area especially VFR and in the corridor, one has to be VERY vigilant. You have to look out the window, and dont get straight ahead-itis, or stare at scenery.

I cant help but to image her asking an aviation expert "How come these airplanes don't have horns to warn each other. How many more have to die until they put them on?" :whatever:

I am just wondering when they are going to ask if birds were involved.

Hahha..

Just watching the NY Fox 5 news report. Asian anchorwoman reads off of a graphic..The graphic showed the airplane and the type PIPER PA34-200

What does she say? "The aircraft involved was a Piper Pennsylvania 34-200..."

Nice job reading the news lady.

New model Piper? :D

Fox News has pictures...wow.

Big deal. Everyone and their uncle's news site would have pictures posted if they had them. Fox is no different from any other news source in that respect. Why do you care if they put up the picture? Why would that degrade the victims?

EDIT: Putting up the pictures is a good thing in my mind. It really hits it home with people like you and me who expect to fly and makes us all that more emotionally pushed to stay extra vigilant on the job. It also makes people more empathic towards those effected. Seeing it induces more emotion than hearing.

Same reason other graphic footage isn't shown. It isn't considered acceptable to show people with limbs ripped off, on fire, etc. There isn't a good, specific explanation--it's simply considered poor taste. It's uncomfortable to see that kind of suffering up close and personal.

As pilots we're especially aware of what those onboard must have experienced. To see photos of an aircraft with a wing separated in flight, it makes it a little "too real." We know what it's like to be on an aircraft like that, carrying a family like that. We don't need pictures to remind us.

The thing is, to the general public, they don't see it from the same perspective. To most people, unless they see shots of specific humans suffering, it isn't graphic, it's just like a movie. All they see are chunks of metal in the sky. They don't connect with the photos on the same level as a pilot.

Fair enough. Those are all valid points for an editor to consider.

I don't have a strong feeling one way or the other. Had I been the news editor, I probably would have run with the photos. But it would have been a tough call to make and I would certainly understand if it offends some people, particularly pilots. News editors can't keep everyone happy all the time.

Maybe I read Positive_Rate's post differently, but all I got out of it was, here is a place you can type in to view pictures, and they are remarkable for any number of reasons. Nothing to do with Fox vs. other networks.
