Hot: Air France Jet Missing (AF 447)

Question for you long-haulers - It is thought by many that the captain would not have been on the flight deck at the stage of the flight when the jet went down. Do the airlines provide any guidelines for when the captain should be called back up?

It all depends how much time it took to happen - when the BA 747 lost all engine power the captain spent the majority of the 14 or 17 minutes it happened in the bathroom.

I am sure the captain will be called up when anything abnormal is noted.

The BBC is now reporting that the debris found is NOT from the Air France ship.

Interesting twist, but expect they'll find something soon. Navigation should be right on track, so that makes it easier compared to the pre GNS/INS combination days.

Re: Hot: Air France Jet Missing

I know someone already brought this up; but, seriously, how in 2009 can a modern airliner's location ever not be known in a situation like this? Like, if there already isn't, why couldn't they just put GPS tracking on all aircraft?

Feel free to tell me why this wouldn't work or whatnot, I'm just curious.

even if the flight was tracked by gps, it wouldnt make much of a difference. Assuming that it crashed, a gps wouldnt have made any difference in the outcome, besides, imo a gps wouldnt withstand the force of an A330 hitting the ground or water for that matter. And if the crash didnt destroy the gps, i'm sure the ocean would.

also, imho i'd rather have hope that my friends/family are alive rather than knowing for a fact they're dead

Absolutely.

In fact, we have new guidelines now, but I'm not sure what they are. There's a few too many people that want their names on company memos so I've probably got at least three dead trees sitting in my v-file, especially since I haven't worked for almost a month!

Just saw this on CNN.com..... Now I don't really understand how A/C seats and cargo pallets... found in that area... cannot be from 447??

The BBC article says its a wooden pallet. Probably dumped over by a ship. Unfortunately there are a lot that use the ocean as their landfill.

OK well that makes more sense then. I hear pallet and I automatically think of an LD pallet. I guess I shouldn't give the news that much credit.
