Good luck with that.... SJU has a whole lot guys on the van waiting to get into the ATR.... if you are simply looking to get into the Caribbean I would recommend DAE out of Aruba and Curacao....

Speaking of the VAN.. how hard is it to get a job with mountain air cargo flying the caravan? I would love that job!

I have spoken to DAE but they are not hiring at the moment.

I just thought MAC might taken on a guy who is already rated with a bunch of PIC time in the ATR

They might but I wouldn't do it personally... in PR there is a saying that basically means "Don't mess with a mans' rice and beans." MAC just let a few guys go who were on the F27 and I know people were not happy about that.... then if you were to show up in the left seat I can only guess that some of those guys would be pretty hostile towards you. Just my opinion..... best of luck with whatever choice you make.

Met a pilot the other night in Newark flying the Van for MAC who had just come from flying the ATR for them in Wisconsin.

Because the pilots at MAC can't fuss if their base is changed, that's about the only downside I know about them.

I don't think theres a chance you'd be hired as a street captain. I know for a fact that there are some FO's that would hurt you.;)

I understand the reasoning behind it but still, if someone is more qualified than you then what can you do. I've always hated that attitude that I've done my time here I should get the job over someone with 2x more experience yada yada.

The problem is though, there are plenty of qualified people (alot of the FO's at MAC are way more qualified than regional and corporate FO's)-all they lack is a PIC type. Should someone with a PIC type thats not current be hired over another. Survey says.....NO!

That is exactly what has happend in the past.... I know of a 10 yr MAC employee in PR who finally was able to get into the right seat of the F27 after 8 yrs with the company. MAC retired the last a few months ago and laid him off along with many others because of the training costs to move them to the ATR... this friend of mine is a great pilot/person... the type of guy who would bend over backwards to help another person out of a bind.
And yet people with no time with MAC and a PIC type want to come in and start at the bottom of the totem pole... this is a problem.... and I don't like it.
Go fly in India.... they need ATR guys there.

I'm holding out for Vietnam.:)

But about your friend in PR, I had heard some of those guys were a real pain in the back side (no offense intended) ie MEL, showing late...Plus, its not that MAC wouldn't pay for the type, FedEx wouldn't pay for the type. FedEx told the Mountain to hire heavy last year, they did and now theres no work for them. Guys are sitting reserve for weeks on end with no flying (they can come give me some time off!). I hate the fact that guys got laid off though.

I agree with you, Mac was not nice to the F27 FO and should have offered him a spot on the ATR or C208. But my personnal opinon tell me it was not due to financial issues, since the F27 captain is in ATR training as we speak. I have my personnal opinion on the subject why they let him go, since I am not in management I can only speculate for the real reason from the company rumors mill, and will not put them on the internet ).

As for the street captain it has been done in the past, but you have to give them credit in the last 1.5 year they have upgraded 8 FO and none of them had prior experience as a captain in heavy turboprop or jet ( 1 guy used to be a FE on A300 ), and all came from within.

MAC is a small company with no seniority ( = seniority is there only if it is in company favor everything is base on merit ...very subjectif.... ), if you are willing to move anywhere, anytime, and show you can do the job you can move pretty fast up the ladder, ask the last guy they upgraded !!!.

I agree with you, I was chocked when I learned they decided to furlough him. Hopefully he has been able to find something else, ameriflight was looking for FO on EMB120 in BQN.

Not the guy I am talking about.... unless he has changed that much in the short time I have been gone from BQN... he was always one of the first to show in the morning.... great attitude and a true love for his job and company. I just think it really stinks.

Personally I think it was a political move... there is only one glaring difference between him and every other MAC pilot I met while I was down there... as far as I know nothing has been available to him as far as work goes... AMF is taking over CPT's stuff... more of my brothers will be out of work in the very near future. Bad times my friends.

Are they still heavy on caravan pilots? Last time I talked to Barron in Vichey , they were overloaded with old guys that weren't leaving anytime soon!

My company did the same thing, let a bunch of us FOs go and were still hiring street captains... go figure.:banghead:

:yup: I hate it when an operator gets overloaded with old guys! I found a solution though. What you do is, take a knife and cut the ham string in their left leg, then they can't fly standard airport patterns anymore. Works great!

Thats how this industry works, better get used to it.

correction: thats how the "airline" industry works. Doesnt work like that in most of the 91/135 companies. (at least that Ive seen).

At my old company, there was a co-pilot that had 4000 hours, 900 in the LR-55. He was all set to be upgraded untill they went out and hired a new guy to take the vacant CA spot... all because he had a current 8410 and slightly more experience in the Lear. Of course everyone was upset, but what can you do? management does whatever they can to save money.
