Who is retiring soon?/ Age 60/65 rule...

One way or the other, most of the furloughs we've seen would not have occurred if that rule hadn't have been forced through in such an abrupt manner.

YGBSM! Age 65 went into effect 12/07. There were NO furloughs until fuel spiked and the economy crashed.

The regionals were hiring like crazy last spring AFTER Age 65 went into effect.

How do you reconcile those FACTS?

Come on, man. Get a grip. One thing has NOTHING to do with the other. Alaska has 20 over 60 pilots, yet we have 60 pilots on the street. I guarantee you that our guys would have been furloughed regardless.

Why would anyone not want the max age upped? 60 is an early age to retire at these days unless you are making hundreds of thousands a year. Besides, if they can pass the medical why not let them fly???

EXACTLY. Want to bet these guys will have a completely different opinion in 20 to 30 years?

Sorry, Pea. That's not how the seniority system works.

Personally, I think military pilots should automatically get seats at major airlines with their DoH pegged to the day they took the oath.

But that isn't happening either.

Reality sucks, doesn't it.

Textbook case of an entitlement attitude. Why should a soldier be treated any differently than a civilian who got their rating through an FBO or a part 141 school? If they have the hours to back it up, then give em the major airline seat. But don't give them any special treatment just because they've flown for uncle sam.

When they are hitting 50/55 and getting that big paycheck, I agree with you 100% that they will think twice about what they said. It's not that hard of a concept to encompass the mind around. I have just under 10 hours flight experience and I already realize that logging as many 10+ year major seniority hours as i can is important in the home stretch to retirement. Call me crazy, but if the man can pass his physical, let him fly and retire whenever he feels.

So uh. . .I'm down . . . only if we make an exception for us enlisted members who left the military to also pursue a flying career. Let's negotiate.

Aren't you a college student?

My Pop retired from Delta at 56 with 1.6M and a 5000k annuity (that was taken away a few months later). He thought that was one year too long. He also thinks anyone that wants to fly after 60 is mentally handicapped. He said that if he had it all over to do again he would have retired at 53.

And Velo, you know what us Delta guys call Alaska Airlines? Delta Connection :D.

Come on people, try and visualize yourself at age 60 and having the man tell you that you are "too old" to fly. The story really hits hard when you are taking the epaulets off 10 years before your friends with other jobs even think of retiring; and then staring at that retirement account thinking "How am I going to have an enjoyable retirement with THIS amount of money?". My grandpa was a sharp knife at 75 years old, still hamming it up on his radio and flying his piper. HOWEVER, that being said, i completely understand the health concerns. I wouldn't be against the idea of requiring 65+ folk needing a medical every 2 months or even every month for that matter to make sure there aren't any conditions about to blindside them. I don't want to get political, but with the way things are going, they will need all the buffer time they can get before retirement. Let's face it, social security is OVER. Why don't YOU put your money where your mouth is and tell a 65 year old man in perfectly good health that he can't fly simply because it's a 'rule' that he must retire at that age. Seriously, how is that fair? Because only the government can legally practice age discrimination...

Wow... Such strong statements being put into other people's mouths. Care telling that to the majority of older captains and seeing what they say about it? That actually kind of pissed me off. "Mentally handicapped"???? I would be hardpressed to find ONE pilot that agrees with that statement. Do us all a favor and don't post idiotic and insulting posts like that.

Hey, just posting what my Dad (a retired Delta L1011 captain) has to say about it. Hell, he is hoping that planes with over-60 captains start crashing so they reverse age-65. I love my Dad, he's hard-core.

Why does it matter? I don't think its right for the gov't to "make" an airline hire someone because of where they did their training or flying. That is something we call communism, which is bad;)

One, things are not good or bad. Sadly life is not that simple.

Two, you sure that's communism?

Well. . .he let you goto Auburn though. I mean. . .Auburn? Seriously? ;)

He went there too so, maybe there is some kind of genetic thing here. Oh yeah, my brother, my step-brother, my wife, my sister-in-law, my brother-in-law, and my mother-in-law all went to Auburn. My step-Mom and sister went to UGA though. Gets real interesting come the second week of November at my house.
