Who is retiring soon?/ Age 60/65 rule...

Like Velo said, I'm not too concerned about age 65 because when I hit 60 I'll be at the maximum earning potential and it would be nice to keep that an extra 5 years when theres no chance for pensions anymore. It kind of sucks for me now, though.

Besides, and this sounds self centered, but postponing the "pilot shortage" for a few years may be advantageous if you consider user fees an inevitability (which I do.)

I hope I'm not hijacking but I had a thought and wondered if anyone else thought the same. When the age 65 rule came out I was initially happy because I thought it gave the 60+'s a couple years to recoup lost earnings. I was of course wrong and it didn't help them at all.

Almost unanimously I've found the older and wiser generation not at all in agreement with me. I think it was hinted at those guys shouldn't be felt sorry for. Anyhow, is anyone else kinda shocked at this 65 rule not helping out the guys that could use it most?

Many a fifty something year old will say they aren't sticking around till age 65. Zero are telling the truth.

I don't see the point in arguing over it though. It's water under the bridge and nothing is going to change it back, so move on. If you want a great chance at an awesome career in aviation, go build a time machine and go back 50 years.

It's not deferred gratification... its 5 more years in the right seat at lower earning potential or 5 more years at a regional.

Age 65 came at the absolute worst time possible, and was implemented the wrong way. It should have been a 7 to 10 year phase in so it wouldn't be such a hammer coming down on the industry.

Velo- you've got yours, and you're getting more of yours. Now that's what I call entitlist.

Age 65 didn't hammer the industry. The fuel spike (surely you remember that!) hammered the industry. The recession continues to hammer the industry.

If neither of those had happened, the airlines might (MIGHT!) have continued expanding creating upgrades and new jobs. Unfortunately, both those events DID happen.

Perhaps you should concentrate on the degradation of pension plans unless when you finally get here you want to self-finance your retirement via a 401k plan and PRAY you're smart enough not to lose 60% of it in the next stock market crash.

Again, Age 60 isn't EVER coming back, so crying over the spilled milk isn't helping. It only makes you look like a sourpuss. And it actually makes me want to stay an extra 5 years just to piss you off.

Age 65 stalled movement and progression while movement was occuring. The music stopped last year with the economy/fuel and the stalled movement exacerbated the effects exponentially.

I personally believe that anyone over 65 should be furloughed first before anyone off the bottom end. APAAD was the biggest load of crap I've ever seen.

Sorry, Pea. That's not how the seniority system works.

Personally, I think military pilots should automatically get seats at major airlines with their DoH pegged to the day they took the oath.

But that isn't happening either.

Reality sucks, doesn't it.

Brother, I used to think you were a cool dude that was just misunderstood. Now, well, I think that you might just be a sad little man that thinks his own crap don't stink. Oh well, lesson learned.:rolleyes:

Don't lose faith. I'm just using a little toughlove on a bunch of kids who somehow think they were entitled to a quick upgrade.

The law changed. Their bubble popped.

Sorry, Whitey if you're stalled. Everyone is. That's life. It sucks.

Then you die.

Hug it out, girls, sheesh!

That, or maybe it's just the refreshments from "New Belgium Brewing Company" talking.

Come on, Doug. You mean you're not pissed you're stuck in an international widebody seat for 5 extra years? Get with the program, man!

Remember what you and I talked about when I said we've got to reach out to the next generation of pilots because no one else is? You're doing it wrong.

haha.... I was trying to figure out why someone was calling me pea and how stupid of an attempt at an insult that was.

One way or the other, most of the furloughs we've seen would not have occurred if that rule hadn't have been forced through in such an abrupt manner.

Why would anyone not want the max age upped? 60 is an early age to retire at these days unless you are making hundreds of thousands a year. Besides, if they can pass the medical why not let them fly???

Look, the principle has been established long before I came around:

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

--Reinhold Niebuhr

These guys are all wound up about something they can't change. They need to get over it, move on and invest some of that righteous energy on something they can fix. Something like insuring THEY will have a profession worth having.
