Am I the only one who absolutely hates pilot uniforms?

I've been unemployed for the past 4 months, and am utterly desperate to get a job. Well just a few hours ago I was offered a job, but the odd thing is that I'm debating not taking it because they make their pilots wear those damn monkey suits. The last two jobs I had (CFI, and cargo pilot) both made me wear those <edited> epaulets and black tie. Six months or so into my instructing tenure I actually found a way to get away with flying in regular clothes, and it is just made flying so much more enjoyable. The same when I was flying cargo, After a few months I just stopped wearing my uniform and it is like a night and day difference. Honestly, had I known the cargo job I had was going to make me wear a uniform, I wouldn't have even taken it. I think it has something to do with the fact that I sweat a lot, which is what makes the monkey suit so uncomfortable. Anyone feel me?

What?????????:banghead::banghead: Dude... Your letting the fact that you have to wear a uniform get in the way of having a flying job????? This has to be a joke... Especially during this time.:confused::confused::confused:

How about you tell the guy that hired you to piss off, and get one of us thats unemployed hired there that would be happy to have a job in exchange for wearing a uniform.

Flight Instructors in uniforms always scare the living poop out of me.
But, so do academies who have their students wear "professional attire"

However, having a chance to find anything closely related to flying an airplane may come with the unbelievable task of wearing such dress....

Thinking about turning down a flying job based on unwillingness to wear a uniform is, in my book equivalent to insanity.

Good luck, there are plenty of people in the unemployment line who would wear not much or everything they are asked to, just to have a fair shot. Next time you send your UC check to the bank, think of how much all others in this country pay you per week so you don't have to wear anything... :(

Just passed one of those guys on the road the other day. He was a middle aged man. And even though I didn't know him or his story, I found myself very impressed with him. He's out there earning a paycheck doing a job nobody wants to do. He's doing what he needs to survive. He's not just sitting on his butt thinking he's too good to take that sort of job.

To the OP - I suppose you are in a financial position that allows you to remain unemployed by choice? If so, fine, but I'd hope we'd all suck up the proverbial Statue of Liberty costume if we had to.

Oh no kidding - especially poignant when the guy is standing a hundred yards from four bums working a street corner for handouts.

Suck it up and take the job. Or pass on the info to someone on the board who WILL take it.

I wouldn't take a job if it made me wear something that I didn't feel comfortable in...

Everyone has their own opinion so rather than bash the OP just tell him or her to take the job.

:)

Thats why every kid should serve in the military when they turn 18. Teach you a thing or two about your appearance and professionalism. I spend 1 hour pressing my uniform, polishing my shoes and metal. I treat my airline uniform just as I do my Coast Guard one. When I go to work, I look sharp. It looks like I put time into making my uniform look sharp. I take pride in that. When your Captain comments on how your shirt is sharper than his, you've done good.

Bitching about wearing a uniform is the most absurd thing I've read on here yet. Maybe someday you can run your own company and let everyone dress like a bunch of village people. But I doubt that. Nothing ticks me off more than seeing Airline pilots walking through the terminal looking like slobs. Then we all wonder why the public has no respect for us anymore. If every pilot had a uniform as sharp as a Marine's, I'd bet people would start to change their opinion.

Well said, Dave, well said. :rawk: For those who think "it's no big deal, no one notices..." You are 100% wrong. People DO notice---be that pax, fellow crewmembers, management, etc.
At the risk of sounding like an old fart, take pride in your appearance. It can be what sets you apart from the crowd. ;)

What a perfect post. Thank You Airdale!
This should be standalone, sticky & locked. :)
Professionalism comes from having a professional attitude.

btw DPAPilot ,check your PM's! ;)

You need the crisp, professional look of the uniform to hide the fact that you're +$19k in salary, and -$100k in debt.

Ha! Tell me about it! :laff: Although I wasnt in the military, I was the Civil Air Patrol and MCJROTC..so I know a thing or 2 about making sure your uniform is looking good.

I definitely try to make sure mine is sharp at all times. Oh and the the OP, take the job and wear the uniform, plenty of guys would like to have the same opportunity.

Hey, if the guy doesn't want to wear a uniform, whatever. There's flying jobs out there where you can wear whatever the heck you want. Those jobs do not involve flying pax, but flying pax isn't the only flying out there. ;) Refusing to wear a uniform limits his job options, but that's his business.

Coming on a message board spouting profanity about it though, is kinda pointless....

One of my dreams is to fly professionally for my entire career without ever having worn a tie.

I think uniforms for cargo is just silly. However since my company does require us to wear uniforms, I make sure I wear it properly.

It's really been bothering me lately that my employer makes me wear clothes. Training aircraft are so small and hot, clothing just makes me sweat in all the wrong places. Apparel also reduces my range of motion, so I think it's a safety issue.

So I went into work naked the other day, and the head honcho got all angry at me. C'mon! My skin is vaguely khaki, much like the fascist "pants" my co-workers wear and I was totally wearing my pilot watch. I don't see how I could possibly have looked more professional.

I hope NekkidAir starts hiring again soon, because I'm not sure how much longer I can stand this draconian dress code.

At least they're not asking you to stand on a street corner, in front of a tax rebate place, wearing a statue of liberty costume.

Hey...that's good money. I was in atlanta for a couple days and the guy offered me 8 bucks an hour for it......I put in 6 hours. It's not much, but the steak I bought with it was mighty tasty :bandit:

My uniform = carharts I've been wearing for the last 3-4 days, carhart jacket to block wind, its pretty beat up, but still warm, beard (its usually warmer with the beard) boots, and a hat. That's winter attire.

Summer attire includes jeans, t-shirt, ballcap, longsleave shirt for fires, boots/tennis shoes depending on wetness.

Pilot attire of the kind in the airline would be more than inappropriate in my case, it'd be dangerous in some situations. I wouldn't object if the company required any specific garments for work, and would wear them with pride, but don't be so sloppy you shoot your paycheck in the foot. Just wear the dammed uniform, and if it's that big of a deal, quit and go someplace where you don't have to. I fail to see what the problem is, yeah it sucks to wear a monkey suit, yeah its uncomfortable, yeah depending on who you are you might look like a doofus in the thing regardless of how well you groom yourself, but so what? They're paying you!
