Am I the only one who absolutely hates pilot uniforms?

I've been unemployed for the past 4 months, and am utterly desperate to get a job. Well just a few hours ago I was offered a job, but the odd thing is that I'm debating not taking it because they make their pilots wear those damn monkey suits. The last two jobs I had (CFI, and cargo pilot) both made me wear those <edited> epaulets and black tie. Six months or so into my instructing tenure I actually found a way to get away with flying in regular clothes, and it is just made flying so much more enjoyable. The same when I was flying cargo, After a few months I just stopped wearing my uniform and it is like a night and day difference. Honestly, had I known the cargo job I had was going to make me wear a uniform, I wouldn't have even taken it. I think it has something to do with the fact that I sweat a lot, which is what makes the monkey suit so uncomfortable. Anyone feel me?

I've never been much of a fan of them either. However, you should probably suck it up and be glad you've found a job if you're so desperate. Getting jobs after the CFI stage where you don't have to wear a uniform is even more rare.

Ehhh if you're gonna let a pilot uniform decide whether or not to take a job, i think that's pretty pathetic.

Suck it up. If uncomfortable, try your best to get the best quality stuff out there. Cotton shirts, vs. all polyester (or a blend) and comfortable pants. Maybe a clip on tie too, so once you're in cruise or behind the door you can take it off.

If i was desperate for a job, or hell even if the job payed well enough, i'd literally wear a monkey suit.

Thats the weird thing. I'm honestly debating being unemployed for a few more months to hold out for a job at a few other companies I know of who only make their pilots wear khaki shorts and a polo. Its almost worth it to me. Thats how much I hate uniforms.

I dont know then. You have to do what's going to make you happy, but i'm sure you completely knew getting into this type of field, they make you generally wear pilot uniforms.

And the whole holding out for another job sounds pretty dumb especially since a lot of places are furloughing, let alone hiring!

I say take the job, and put some time and passion into taking pride in your uniform! You've earned it's value, despite how annoying it may look, or uncomfortable!

I can't seriously believe that in today's economic times, with pilots all over the street, you would let the fact that you have to wear a tie determine whether or not you took to job. I can't seriously believe that with the attitude you displayed in your post that you were able to charm somebody into giving you a job. Personally, if I didn't have a job and had been unemployed for four months I would wear a Bozo suit if a job required it...but that is just me.

Yep, pink shirt with a beanie with a propeller on top... just tell me how often you want me to shine my clown shoes. I don't care as long as the paycheck cashes. I'll wear the uniform -- whatever it is -- with pride.

Are you serious???? Find a new career. Do you know how many people are having a hard time finding work that have tons and tons of experience and are willing to put up with far worse than having to wear a uniform? You know what? stay unemployed... If uniforms are the problem, I can only imagine what will piss you off next in this career field. Do have any idea how lucky you are to have a job opportunity? How the hell are you paying any bills?

Unreal.

Wow- first off-the whole Jr High swearing thing doesn't impress adults, and probably won't help you to network your way into a job.
Second-be glad you have an opportunity to get paid to fly right now. I'm sure that there's someone else who would take the job and be thankful he/she was wearing the monkey suit rather than a McDonald's uniform.

At least they're not asking you to stand on a street corner, in front of a tax rebate place, wearing a statue of liberty costume.

I hate them but I don't have to wear them either. On the off hand that I came upon a job where I had to wear them I'd probably take the job, have a picture taken of me in the monkey suit, and send it to my mother in a card.

Then, I'd go to work.

Just passed one of those guys on the road the other day. He was a middle aged man. And even though I didn't know him or his story, I found myself very impressed with him. He's out there earning a paycheck doing a job nobody wants to do. He's doing what he needs to survive. He's not just sitting on his butt thinking he's too good to take that sort of job.

To the OP - I suppose you are in a financial position that allows you to remain unemployed by choice? If so, fine, but I'd hope we'd all suck up the proverbial Statue of Liberty costume if we had to.

:yeahthat:

We have about 100 resumes on file with no hiring going on.

At my corporate gig I have to wear polos and khakis which is not too bad, but I also have to wear dress shoes which I hate. I went out and dropped 200 bucks on some ecco's and now they are the most comfortable shoes I own.

If you hate it so darn much, why are you asking us? Personally, if it really bothered me, I'd take the job and hang on to it until something else came up. It's not like tons of companies are hiring right now.

Paging Velocipede and Qgar to discuss the importance of uniforms to the public perception of the profession! :)
