Am I the only one who absolutely hates pilot uniforms?

Thats why every kid should serve in the military when they turn 18. Teach you a thing or two about your appearance and professionalism. I spend 1 hour pressing my uniform, polishing my shoes and metal. I treat my airline uniform just as I do my Coast Guard one. When I go to work, I look sharp. It looks like I put time into making my uniform look sharp. I take pride in that. When your Captain comments on how your shirt is sharper than his, you've done good.

Bitching about wearing a uniform is the most absurd thing I've read on here yet. Maybe someday you can run your own company and let everyone dress like a bunch of village people. But I doubt that. Nothing ticks me off more than seeing Airline pilots walking through the terminal looking like slobs. Then we all wonder why the public has no respect for us anymore. If every pilot had a uniform as sharp as a Marine's, I'd bet people would start to change their opinion.
:yeahthat:
Amen!!

Having a uniform keeps you from having to figure out what to put on in the morning. You don't have to keep up with the latest fashion trends. It's just like when you were a kid and your mom would lay out your clothes for you! Makes life a whole lot easier. :D

Good call Dave. I'm glad we at least have a few pilots at our company that feel the need to look nice. Speaking of which, have you seen the recent thread on our pilot site about uniforms/hats? Good grief...

Sheesh some people need to calm down or something. All things considered, the #1 worst thing I hated about the last two flying jobs was by far the fact that I had to wear a uniform. It just struck me kinda funny that after all this time of begging for a job, I end up getting an offer by the one and only place I've come across that actually makes you wear a uniform. Especially considering it's very rare to have to wear a full uniform doing the three jobs I've done/will do. It's like rolling snake eyes three times in a row.

By the way, if this job was in a Gulfstream or Citation or something with air conditioning, I'd gladly wear the uniform. But it's a bush flying job in the middle of equatorial Africa in a PA-28. Which means I can dress myself real nice in the morning, with the cleanly pressed shirt and polished shoes, but three minutes after walking out the door, I'll be a soggy mess.

And to the person who said I was "showing off" by bragging about being financially able to be unemployed for another four months, I'm only able to do this because I currently live in a tent and eat nothing but bread and tap water, which I have been doing for the past 5 weeks.

As I do not have the ability to be hired for any flying job I continue with my lucrative and trusty career in healthcare. I get to wear pajamas.

When the day comes to put on the uniform to work I will w/o question and wear with pride as my father did in the past.

We may have had a bit more sympathy for you if you would have included this little tidbit in your original post. Not much mind you, but a little:D

Nope

The best transformation I saw came from someone that didn't mind the uniform, but didn't show it off, either.

On the hotel bus to the airport, there was an elderly gentleman in a nice tweed sport coat, looking like a grandfather on the way home from visiting the grandkids. Our crew had him pegged as a passenger, thus there was no conversation. He stayed with our group as we headed for TSA, and right before we entered the line, in one fluid motion, the grandfather's jacket came off and went into his bag, his jacket and hat came out, and AA Captain Grandfather joined the line.

Well, if you're betting on the Don't Pass line on the roll-out, (or the Horn, Whorl, etc., etc.) you're a winner.

There's something for everyone in every situation. In your case, the house wins.

I personally can't wait to actually wear a real uniform!! I think that's something that a lot of guys look forward to when getting their first real flying job, following one of flight instructing for example! There is no way I would let wearing one or not come in between me taking a job, expecially with the way the industry is today. That should be one of the last reasons to not accept a job! :whatever:

My 2c worth...

Not liking a uniform is about like applying for the Barnum Bailey circus and being aghast that you might have to step in some elephant poo in the center ring.

You think chicks dig airline pilot unis, you should see them when you show up in Navy Trop whites with wings and ribbons on.

YOWZA!

I can't even believe that you would decline a job right now in this type on environment. Pilots are out there looking over and under for jobs and there just aren't many around...and YOU, OP, would decline a job because you had to wear epaulets? I would wear any uniform given to me with pride, no matter if it WAS Mcdonald's (been there, done that). You should be ashamed that you even posted that on here. :banghead:

Please don't fly for the airlines....Hating on the uniform is blasphemy! ...The uniform is the ultimate image of a professional pilot and the best wingman you could ever ask for when picking up women! :nana2: .......Great example -Last week I was sitting at the dentist office in my uniform and the sexy dentist assistant insisted that she take me out for dinner.... It takes no effort to pick up women when wearing the uniform :rawk:

For a minute there, I thought you were referring to one of the new USAF uniforms....

Yep, they kill me with all the uniform changes. I think that is all they do when they do Corona. Just nuts. The Monday blues thing is pretty funny around here...so many peeps volunteer to fly or do DNIF backup on Monday...you think it might be coincidental?

I have heard the two piece flight suits are pretty cool, although I have never seen them. Also, I couldn't use my favorite line anymore either: "Never trust a man with a 3 foot long zipper!" :)

I still can't get over the irony of sitting around HQs in a bag, while others are flying in ties.:laff:
