Branson Offers Capt. Sully a Job (double the pay)

Interesting to read this thread so far. The general consensus seems to be that if you guys were in his shoes you'd leave your union-protected (albeit USAPA) job in a heartbeat and jump to a non-union run shop where you acknowledge you'd be screwing over your fellow pilots for double-wages but so be it. This is 180 degrees from the tone set on this website about Union protection and makes you sound like well...hypocrites.

He shoots he scores!

Wow, very good comment & a very interesting point of view:rawk::D

It would be a delicious "F-you" to Parker and the rest of USAir management. He could accept the job and explain what a sewer the place was, how he had taken enormous hits to his pay and retirement and how the stock price bounced up some $20million the day of his wreck, after the news announced no fatalities and yet Parker et al still think the pilots are overpaid. I would love it for him to do this.

WF,

Can't dispute anything you say. Unfortunately, nothing Sullenberger or any other USAir pilot does will have even the slightest impact on USAir management. I also doubt he would find it to his personal advantage to start publically bad mouthing USAir even though they deserve it big time.

I guess my first reaction to this offer he got was to be careful that he not get used all over again. I doubt Branson cares any more for the VA pilots than USAir does for theirs and is therefore no more trustworthy than any other airline management pencil monkey. When/if VA goes sneakers up, where will Sullenberger be then ?

I wish him and all other USAir pilots the best.

I guess we are even then, because I can't dispute anything you say either. And, you are correct - he would only diminish his reputation by slamming USAir. fun thought though...

And what would the FO get? I suppose he would get to move up one seniority number if Sully leaves. Thats a pretty awesome deal.

Are you really surprised? "Pilot unity" is just the illusion that is created when the majority of pilots vote in their personal best interest (which they will always do).

Richard Branson is such the Paris Hilton of the airline business.

"How in the world do I get my name associated with the hot aviation topic of the day? Hmmm"

I'm not sure who you're speaking about, but since it appears I might have been lumped into your little analysis. . .I must defend my post and indicate that I do not condone pissing all over your fellow pilots for a buck or two.

But - whatever.

“I’d like him to come fly for us,” Branson tell us. “We’ll make him the best-paid pilot at Virgin — we’ll give him double [the salary of] anybody else.

He also can become one of the astronauts in my intergalactic spaceship company. The man can write his own ticket with me.”

Sullenberger sounded interested when we conveyed Branson’s offer.

“That’s amazing,” said the man who saved the lives of 155 people when he deftly landed a jetliner in the freezing Hudson River on Jan. 15. “I hadn’t heard that.”

Obviously a Branson publicity stunt. If it was genuine, Sully wouldn't have heard it from the press. Though Sully could whip out the UPS or Fedex pay scale and soak Virgin ATLANTIC for about $450 an hour.

:laff::laff: You got THAT right !! Besides, Branson is just looking for a publicity stunt with this gambit. He'll exploit Sullenberger and toss him aside like a used condom.
:laff:

Yep. That's it.

I sure hope the FO and all the FAs were nearby, but I doubt it.

You weren't paying attention were you. Missed those 4 other people standing next to him?

you are also forgetting one thing. QOL! If he does take it, I assume he will get a nice seniority number as well. Capt. Sully lives in Cali, nor cali, I think. VAs home base. NO MORE COMMUTING!!! .

I believe R.B. in charge of Virgin ATLANTIC not Virgin America. He's just the majority investor over there.

"How in the world do I get my name associated with the hot aviation topic of the day? Hmmm"

Yep. A real publicity hog.

The diff is Branson is a genius. A true rag to riches story.

I think Paris is more of a genius. She missed the "rags" stage. :banghead:

Anyone catch him on TV just before the national anthem last night at the game? I'm pretty sure that was him, he had the Airways wings on...I'll have to go back on DVR and check again...if it was him, I sure hope the FO and all the FAs were nearby, but I doubt it.

You must have been in the fridge after the last of your beer! They introduced the whole crew and all five of them got a standing ovation. :)

A Virgin America A320 was seen earlier today to be circling the San Francisco bay, diving at flocks of birds...

Merit-based pay is fine as long as it leads to increased returns for the company. Ya think VA would get more passengers if they knew the good Capt was up front? ... or was this just another case of some random neutrino from space beaning Branson in the gourd?

Sweet offer, but I think he'd turn it down also. If it were me, I'd do the "keynote speaker circuit" for a few years and bank some serious cash. :nana2:
