Wow, this would be one way to piss off your fellow pilots.

“I’d like him to come fly for us,” Branson tell us. “We’ll make him the best-paid pilot at Virgin — we’ll give him double [the salary of] anybody else.

He also can become one of the astronauts in my intergalactic spaceship company. The man can write his own ticket with me.”

Sullenberger sounded interested when we conveyed Branson’s offer.

“That’s amazing,” said the man who saved the lives of 155 people when he deftly landed a jetliner in the freezing Hudson River on Jan. 15. “I hadn’t heard that.”

I wouldn't think less of him for accepting an offer to be a astronaut.

But, what is Branson thinking? Does he realize this just might piss off the rest of his pilots?

Also, I find it hilarious that the spaceship company is "inter-galactic". Sorry, but you got about another 10,000 years before we get close to that one, Branson.

:laff::laff: You got THAT right !! Besides, Branson is just looking for a publicity stunt with this gambit. He'll exploit Sullenberger and toss him aside like a used condom.

I know a couple of USAir pilots. Allegiance to USAir ? I don't hear anything like coming from these guys. In fact, I can't print what I hear coming from them.

Even so, Sullenberger better "dance with the one who brung him" even if she's fat and ugly. This is about money...and Branson won't be offering enough.

Funny stuff, though.:laff::laff::laff::laff::laff::laff:

So what...as if USAir hasn't done this (use and discard like a used condom) to every pilot on their list? Skiles is a 23 year vet and an FO??? Look, everyone is getting used, everyone is selling their time for money - make it worth your while I say.

If Branson wants to double the pay for Sully, great. If you look at Sully's background and work with ALPA he could be Chief Pilot at VA, or maybe the head of pilot training to utilize his expertise in CRM. Either way, USAir is a sewer that has performed non-consensual anal on every pilot that has worked for them. If Sully can escape this and make some bucks, yipee! Also, because he was so heavily involved in ALPA, he may or may not like the idea of USAPA. If he can bail and double his salary, good for him.

Funny stuff, though.:laff::laff::laff::laff::laff::laff:

My responses above, in red font.

Being able to double your salary at age 58, or stay at a carrier that doesn't give two craps about you?

Talk about a no-brainer!

What is the pilot pay of Virgin? I thought it was around $80k. Branson said he'd double the pay of everyone at his company, so $160k. Not double Sully's current pay; or that is how I read it.

Anyone catch him on TV just before the national anthem last night at the game? I'm pretty sure that was him, he had the Airways wings on...I'll have to go back on DVR and check again...if it was him, I sure hope the FO and all the FAs were nearby, but I doubt it.

you are also forgetting one thing. QOL! If he does take it, I assume he will get a nice seniority number as well. Capt. Sully lives in Cali, nor cali, I think. VAs home base. NO MORE COMMUTING!!! If Sully is part of US east, he was commuting to charlotte, DC or philly. At best he was only commuting to LAS or PHX. based at home, great seniority, and not have to take a paycut! I would be there so fast, its not even funny.

Yep, he was at the game. There were multiple people with him who I assume were the rest of the crew.

It would be a delicious "F-you" to Parker and the rest of USAir management. He could accept the job and explain what a sewer the place was, how he had taken enormous hits to his pay and retirement and how the stock price bounced up some $20million the day of his wreck, after the news announced no fatalities and yet Parker et al still think the pilots are overpaid. I would love it for him to do this.

Interesting to read this thread so far. The general consensus seems to be that if you guys were in his shoes you'd leave your union-protected (albeit USAPA) job in a heartbeat and jump to a non-union run shop where you acknowledge you'd be screwing over your fellow pilots for double-wages but so be it. This is 180 degrees from the tone set on this website about Union protection and makes you sound like well...hypocrites.

Financially, I think Sully is going to be ok after this. He will probably tell Branson thanks but no thanks.

Sully lives in Danville, CA. Danville is a town out on the east bay of San Francisco and is wildly popular with the airline crews. It's an upscale nice place to live.

I *think* Danville has a higher per capita airline pilots than anywhere other than maybe Spruce Creek.
