Zipper ties

One of my goals in life is to fly my entire career having never worn a necktie.

Probably won't be able to pull it off, but it's a nice goal.

Would you believe it, he got a zipper!

I should upload that video of me loosening the tie onto youtube and link it here. What an insane debate that was.

Shut up. No he didn't. What the hell is this world coming to?

Just tried this with my zipper tie. If you have someone grab you by the tie, yank your neck back hard. It unzips. It still doesn't break away like a clip-on would, but it's not as bad as everyone seems to think. I was able to unzip and duck out every time, and Nessa was TRYING to choke me. :)

Not if they grab both the tie end and the zippy end at the same time (I would think), if you yank your neck back hard in that case it will like choke you to death.

If you're concerned about someone grabbing your zipper tie then try this:
Wear tie, then have someone cut it in the back (back of neck area) then sew it up weakly, it will be strong enough for daily wear but a strong jerk and the threads holding it together will break.

Edit: just realized this won't work bc you'd have to cut thru zipper. Heh

I wear a zip tie most of the time because I do highspeeds alot. I give myself about 5 mins to get ready and tie-ing a tie just doesn't cut it. I will have to look into that velcro tie. Do they last a while? or does the velcro wear out quickly?

Actually, she had both ends. I've got an ALPA pin through mine that kinda latches it. You'd have to awkwardly hold both parts with two hands to make it work. If you've got my tie with two hands, I've got two free hands to pummel you.

I wear a regular tie but am considering switching to a clip on for convenience. The security aspect is another big benefit. We already look like used car salesmen by sporting the short sleeve/tie look, why not go all out with the clip on?

Although, sometimes I wonder if that metal clip from the clip on could be used to stab you in the neck or something. I guess your wings or pen would probably be better for that anyway.

Great for "blood pinning" guys new to the ER operation up in JFK.

Ahh yes, you know you've "made it" when you have a couple of holes in your chest, oozing blood from those finely crafted, lead-coated, chinese made wings! A clip-on tie blood pinning would truly be a badge of honor. Milton would be proud.

Sounds kinky. ;)

I used to wear a zipper tie with my Pinnacle uniform, but AirTran has special ties with our little cursive "a" logo on it, so you can't get it in a zipper version. Had to change to the clip-on. I've gotten used to it.

I'm a clip-on man all the way... for convenience and safety.

I wore a regular tie christmas tie in December. Although I enjoyed wearing said goofy tie, it really made me appreciate the clip-on.

:yeahthat: I also wear a regular tie doing union business, and man, it really isn't as convenient as the clip-on. It takes me a good 5 minutes to tie a full windsor in the morning. :)

Regular nylon tie from pilotshirts.com with slots in the short end to attach to your shirt buttons. And I never untie it--just loosen and slip over my head.

You guys planning on getting in a bunch of brawls while in uniform?

If the reasoning is a hijacker breaking into the cockpit then I think you may have more issues than your tie. I guess you can never be to safe though.

Zipper ties for me all the way. As for the comfort factor, just unzip it and unbutton the top and you're all good to go. Plus with the zipper you can leave the top button undone and zip the tie up and no one knows.

Bathroom break can't be made without a tie on.

Well, you never know when you have to beat someone's ass about whether to set up for a hand-flown CAT II or just to ahead and set up for a CAT III autoland.

I like to run a tight ship.
