Youngest crew?

When we got back from SFO today, the captain looked over at some pax boarding and saw one lady mouth to her husband, "those pilots look aweful young!" Hahahahha. I think its good that we have a good sense of humor about it. I know some guys that would flip their bolts over people telling him he looked like a kid. Especially if he was PIC!

I must look like a grizley old man or something. I can only recall a few instinces. Its rather common to have a CA and FO under 25 in the regionals.

I noticed young crews on Independence Air this February. My Mom turned to me, grabbed my arm and said:

"Adam, they look your age."

and I'm 17.

But you have to start at some age!

Started flying turbines at 20, command upgrade on the B1900 at 24. Took a little while to get used to flying around with F/Os 10 yrs older, but no problems at all.

Ugh. Well I'm 27 and finishing my private. I hate all of you.

For the real young guys flying Regionals; I'm assumming you did the online degree if one at all. If this is so, do you feel like you missed out on the college life? Any regrets by going in so early?

Jeff

I went to Univ of Calif at Irvine, but I wouldn't call UCI much of a colleg life. I ended up taking a later class date so I could finish my degree. Only delayed me 2 months.

I am not at the Regionals, *yet*. but I do sometimes regret not having the college experience. I went to one semester, then moved to Florida, then instructed, and now am 23 and kinda think I should have partied in college for a while longer, but i was

in college because I knew I wanted to fly, and I wasnt. But then again, I have visited some very interesting places, and meet very interesting people over the last 5 years, and would never had the chance to do such in college.

I have the opposite problem from most of you....I'm 22 (hired 2 months before my 22nd birthday) but most people think I'm in my 30's when I'm in uniform (and no I'm not balding...yet). I believe I was the fourth youngest pilot on the ExpressJet seniority list until old AlaskaAirlines came over, hehehe. Regarding college, I did 90 hrs worth of work at a traditional style university before I gave that up to come here. With that much work done I can afford to take 1 or 2 classes per semester online and have it wrapped up in a year or two.

College just didn't do much for me, because I could not find something that I was truly interested in reading about and studying for 8 hours a day other than aviation. I changed majors 4 times before I left for the airlines. In retrospect I'd have to reccomend that everyone stay in school until they finish if they can tolerate it. Also, you should make the decision on where you want to go to school with a specific goal in mind, don't just go somewhere because your family wants you to.

To me, the "college experience" wasn't something that I enjoyed, the whole thing was a lot of work and stress, but it's necessary to get a degree if you want to get anywhere. In my opinion the easiest way to do that is to ger your AP credit in High School, then attend a brick and mortar university and knock it out in 3 or 4 years.

I ended up dissapointing my family quite a bit by failing to earn a degree from our "legacy" school, but you can't please everyone! Doug is doing the responsible thing with this website by encouraging everyone to finish school before they join the labor force. There's really no hurry, by the time you retire, I doubt you'll care much that you started working 2 years earlier!

I went to a 4 year school right after HS. Finished 4 years later with a BS. Got Interviewed/hired 1 month after graduation at 22.

Apparantly!

I believe they list "4 yr degree preferred" on the application. Almost everyone I fly with has one as did 95% of my newhire class.

I may have lucked out during the HR interview, as the unviersity I did my coursework at happened to be the same one that the daughter of the guy that was interviewing me was attending. He's the senior director of flight operations (Chief Pilot). They did ask me why I hadn't finished (hey, I'm 21), and also asked me what my plans were for my education.

Cool I'm studying at a ERAU extended campus and plan after that to attend ATP.
I hear alot of instructors/graduates from ATP are getting hired on with Express Jet.

Good luck on your type ride Peanuckle.....

I don't think I've ever seen a skywest pilot over 30 hehehe. You guys are too easy to spot, sorry if I'm stereotyping here....but if I see anybody with spiked hair, oakleys, wearing gap/abercrombie out of uniform, I have to assume they're a skywest crew.

Or one of our's. Have you been to Houston lately? Like within the last 4 months?

Fair enough, but I think we fit in more more with the wal-mart shopper crowd. Eh, maybe it's just me.

That won't be me. I'll be the 36 year old FO running around in North Face stuff while out of uniform. All the while, I'll be the one with the sh*t eating grin too.

I am just polishing off my fifth course to go with ERAU extended campus. Once I am done I will have the Pro Aero degree. If I could do it all again I wouldn't have stayed in school. Doing this one or two classes at a time is a joke and not the way to get edjumakated.

If I had it to do over again, I would never have dropped out in the mid-90s. I've got one more to go after my ratings and the two classes I'm taking now. You're right, though. This one or two classes at a time is just frustrating at times. Granted it's about the only way I can afford it.

I was less than a month into being 22 when I got hired at Chicago Express. While there, flew a 5-day trip over Christmas with a 25 year old captain who looked 15, and a 21 year old flight attendant. Combined age of 68. Surprisingly only one comment from a passenger.

I get probably one comment a day from a gate agent or passenger about how young I look. I got an ego boost this last trip since we had all these spring breakers on our flights, and our F/A said girls kept saying stuff about the "cute pilots." Me, 23, and captain, 27. He was a captain at 23 at XJT!

If you think about it... 36 years until retirement! My Lord, that is a lot If they up the age to 65, then 41 years! Gasp!!!!
