I'm flying a trip right now with a captain who's 24! I'm only 25. Combined age of 49- we beat the F/A who's 54! Yikes! Not only are we the same age, but we both grew up within miles of each other, trained at airports 30 miles away, and pretty much have the same interests. I think it has more to do with age than preference or personality.

This whole trip we've had more than one person on EVERY single flight give us a double look over. He's mexican and I'm afghan so two young dark skinned guys in the cockpit. you should see the look on their faces!!! HAAAA!!!!!!!!!

Although I do have to say that since I'm flying with someone whos not double my age, its much easier to point out the eye candy!

My radar doesn't have to work twice as hard!

Talk to you guys when I get back!

When I was an f/o on the B727 I flew a bid period with two other guys and none of us were over the age of 30. I made Capt at the commuters at age 24 (probably looked 16) and flew many trips with guys my age or younger. The looks we'd get from passengers was priceless!

There was a Virgin Atlantic Captain who was 24 - can you imagine the comments/looks he got. I know UPS had a similar guy, but boxes do not know better.

A friend of mine was a captain for BA on the 757/767 when he was late 20s, he was a young one because a lot of the 757/767 were 40+. On the bus waiting to be driven an FA turned to him and said do you know where the captain is - HA HA HA.

Ive had passnegers make comments that I only caught the end of: "Doesn't look old enough to drive!". I'm 24, and not old looking, but I didn't realize I was that young looking. I just take it all as a compliment! I know I'll be wishing people would still be making such comments in 20 years time when Im all old and beat up.

Man, I'm 24 and I'm only just finished my PPL and am starting on my commercial. For you guys to be 24 or 25 and have jobs already, especially in the current situation in aviation, is fantastic. You must have to start really early in to get everything done so quickly. I think that I will probably be about 26 when I finally finish training and am able to start looking for my first flying job.

Unbelievable.

I'm going to graduate college when I'm 24 (which is in 3 yrs. having only a PPL).

Another year to save up some dough, and then I'm guessing another 2 years for Ratings/Instructing to log enough time to meet minimums. I'll probably be 27-28! Please tell me you real young aviators are a select few.

I've encountered a number of really young guys so far in my career. For everybody it is different. In my new hire class at XJT I'm the last in sneiority. I think the guy above me is 23.

Last week flew w/ a capt that was 24 in the ERJ, (I'm 26) = 50. Flight attendant was in late 40's with daughters our age....

SkyJeff, its not that you wish that the youngun's are few and far between. Its that they'll give the ' old guys ' a chance!
I will be hitting 40 right at the time I am in the ATP range and looking at Regional jobs.

Just got off the phone talking about how old I am getting at 31 and the response was "You're not that old" so then I start feeling better. Then I see this thread..........

Just an FYI Ed has his [censored] together and has had it together for a while like no one else I know - I just wish I was somewhere close!

I am 23, and looking to get into RJ positions.... I have a question about interviews in this situation to the other young RJ drivers.

Does the interview process change tone a little when it is with a younger pilot, or what should I expect when I finally get that interview with reguards to age?

I have had to deal with this issue while I was instructing, and in some of the other flying jobs, especially since I still look like I am 17. (actually got escorted out of a establishment by the bouncers last week, because they thought I was consuming under age, I showed them DL, pilots liscense, CFI, 3 different credit cards, and they sitll didnt believe me until I went to the car and retreived my US Passport) but I am interested to hear more of what actually happens in these situations at the regionals.

When it comes down to the actual job, I do not believe there will be a problem with my experience and character. But the perception of someone else, especially those on the hireing board, can be very deciving.

Anybodys 2cents would be great!!!

It's true. He does look like he's 12. At least, that's what my wife said when she first met him. "What??! Your instructor's a kid!" I had to remind her that the "kid" knew a lot more about instrument flying than I did.

Please don't go around showing bar bouncers your pilot certificates and passport. A beer ain't that important and it's none of their d@mn business. If a drivers license doesn't cut it with them...just leave and go somewhere else.

The interview process is what you make of it. My entire aviation career I was always very young for the position I applying and interviewing for. Worse yet, I always looked much younger than my age. I think I made up for it by deciding a long time ago to become the best pilot I could be. I've worked very hard to achieve that goal yet it's still a work in progress.

You will have to earn people's respect by your actions and professionalism. Unfortunately, people will assume you're inexperienced based on your age and you will have to work hard to gain their trust. It's just human nature to think that way. To this day, at age 43 and after 22 years in the airline biz, 14 of which have been in the left seat, I still have folks thinking I'm the f/o whenever I fly with someone in their 50's.

Great thing is.....time will change all that!

I would've gone straight to the manager. Sounds like they were just being pricks.
