You are all hired!

He's not talking about the brink of financial apocalypse reducing safety standards. What he means "You are all FIRED!".

Head out of ass now?

That's the other threat the companies always seem to pull out of their bag in an effort to not have to comply with whatever they don't want to comply with. They bring it out during labor negotiations when a strike is on the table. They bring it up whenever they just don't want to do something. It's nothing new. Spirit just tried the same BS during the last strike and it didn't get them very far.

The bottom line is that airlines are a business and in order to maintain a profit they must remain in business. Once they reach critical mass (like all of them have) they must maintain a certain size in order to remain profitable. If they drop below critical mass they will lose efficiencies and their costs start increasing which means they aren't competitive.

When oil went to $120 a barrel, the airlines kept buying the stuff. Why didn't they "fire the oil companies" and stop flying then? The answer is because they couldn't. They had to remain in business even though oil is the biggest threat to aviation, your welfare and this country.

I wasn't referring to work rules or fatigue. I'm only saying that maybe, just maybe, with rising commodity prices, another $600 billion "stimulus" and the economy really not making a strong comeback, that it's possible that 2011 might not shape up to be a great year. Oh yeah, and the possibility of an Iranian war. What would that do to oil prices. I really, really hope things continue to pick up in this industry because I, along with so many other people, want some movement. Not to mention the people who are unemployed. I want to be optimistic, just not too optimistic.

Just a reminder, this thread is about work rules and fatigue so I'm sure you can understand how someone might believe your post might be related to work rules and fatigue since it is posted in the work rules and fatigue thread.

I'm with you that 2011 might not shape up to be a great year. As long as small business is crippled in this country, the economy can not improve. We've got to get small business healthy. Small business is responsible for 70% of the jobs in this country.

Oops. Yes, the thread is about work rules and fatigue. The original post indicated that commercial pilots might not be out of work for long and I was only pointing out that there are a number of factors that could impede hiring, regardless of rest rules. I get what you're saying, though. I didn't mean to get too far off topic or hijack the thread or anything. Hopefully things will change for the better.

We all hope so. Injecting a little bit of wide-view reason into yet another pie-in-sky-assertion thread is not a crime.

Do you have some better numbers, regarding this subject, that you want to share with eveyone Boris?

We're at 27%.

ALPA is at a figure between 18%-41% depending on the time of day.

I spoke with one of the carriers at ACE (Katilla) in Las Vegas and the chief pilot indicated they were at 27%.

Doug says Delta indicated it is somewhere around 7%.

What is your figure on this issue?
