Yet another Newb

You are right about the ADF website. It's not currently of value. They should leave web community, and job listing to the experts

The live events are where the networking value come in. The lunches and open bar cover the membership. Being part of this web community is an incredible value (free). But sit down at a big round table and have lunch with 10 other dispatchers from Delta one day, United another day and round it out by meeting FAA folks and people from the private sector working on ADS-B. Plus Vegas was FUN. Lifelong memories and friends.

Networking is a skill that can be learned. It just won't come to you. A library card (free) is a secret weapon :)

I've sat in on the ADF board meetings and they really do some important work behind the scenes.Think about this -- how many times have you told someone your occupation and they have no idea what you do? That is NO BUENO. Elected officials, the government in general, the private sector are surprisingly ignorant of our profession and the value that we add. There are forces that would like to eliminate dispatch as it currently exists. The ADF is countering those forces.

The one thing I cant emphasize enough is to both network and take advantage of whatever interview offers you have.

Many dispatchers I know have gotten numerous interviews with the majors but always seem to get turned down. I was lucky to get hired by a major on my first try but the thing that allowed that to happen was being in the right frame of mind at the interview and to put on as good of an impression on the interviewers as possible.

Gee, you got on at a major on your first try !!! Because YOU were in the right frame of mind ! Aren't you just totally special !!!!

The biggest downfall of dispatchers that seem to get stuck at the regionals is that they stumble somehow at the major airline interview. I know people that have taken a horrible resume and nailed the interview and gotten hired. I know people with great resume's that never seem to be able to get passed the interview. When you get a chance to get interviewed at a major, bring your A+ game to whatever interview you go to. You may or may not get another chance if you don't take advantage of what you have now.

Lovely vague anecdotes !!! And here you are lecturing the rest of us Professor !!!
And you KNEW they stumbled !!! A mind reader too !!!
Your Mommy must be soooooooooooooooo proud !!!

Also remember to follow trends. If you know people at the majors, ask them about the experience levels and career paths of the people they hire. While it may not get you the job it can certainly increase your probability of getting hired by trying to match your resume with what seems to get people hired. If FedEx hires mainly internally and that's where you want to be, network and ask a FedEx dispatcher which internal jobs get hired the most frequently and how does one get into that job.

Hey hey listen up !!! Professor boy is lecturing us all !!! He knows EXACTLY what to do !!!!!!

Yes, management does change and hiring practices evolve but you need to constantly adjust based on the current situation. The people that adjust get hired whereas those that stay in a bad situation don't ever move on to better things.

Professor boy now deigns to JUDGE us !!!!
By the way your Mom is calling you !!!

AnonymousDxer.......We don't appreciate being lectured by winners of the jobs lottery. If you have something of ACTUAL benefit feel free to post. Self righteous platitudes WILL be met with disdain.

Hey chum !........Here is the real scoop.....There are not enough quality jobs AVAILABLE for all safe, competent and DESERVING Dispatchers. Your post comes off as one long condescending rant.

By your own admission you lucked out.....try not to rub our collective noses in it !!!

Bitter much? Just because someone got lucky doesn't mean they didn't deserve it. More than one person in the world has gotten lucky and implying that they condescend by saying it could happen to someone else is just your own form of judgment.

Awwwwww......another Mommy's boy who judges !!!!

So what is it like to live in Mom's basement ?

You logic is flawed......Just because someone got lucky DOES NOT mean they deserve it !

@Andy Nguyen see what I mean? Not all of the posts on JetCareers (or the posters) serve any purpose whatsoever. I think this serves as a prime example of how not to be... ever...

Knock off the personal attacks and other crap here. I don't normally patrol this section of the forum because my interest in Flight Dispatch is the sum total of zero+zero, but if I have to be coming into this neighborhood because people can't seem to post like adults....from whatever side of the aisle they're on.......then it's not going to be fun.

Read and heed.

Awwwww.......Still going thru life as a judgmental, moralizing sap who THINKS he has ALL the answers ????

How DO you stand all the mold and fungus in Mom's basement ?

Did you happen to miss what I just wrote above?

I asked, now I'm in tell mode. Next comes make mode.

If you have comments and a point of value to make, make them without ad hominems.

I think Mike and I have reached an understanding

To Boiler and others......if you don't LIKE what I say....fair enough

But DO NOT make judgements about ME to my face......I tend to respond in kind

Wow LTDXER. You really gotta throttle back a bit. Not sure what has set you into rampage mode, but I don't think you want to wake up in the morning to find you burned everything to the ground.

Usually this subforum is really sedate.....

Thanks for livening things up, LTDXER.

Thank you Figby.......That is EXACTLY my intent !

You see without postings.....no ad revenue......and one day NO FORUM !

Wow. Not quite sure how my posting from an indroctuction to the forum and regular advice went into such a rampage about nonsense and egos. Guess you get that everywhere you go but not my cup of tea. Unfortunately there's always a few bad eggs everywhere

Also thank you everyone else who had quality advice for us newbie dispatchers and those who are on there way to becoming a newbie as well! All the information you guys provided I, and the others I'm sure, are very appreciative of it and we look forward to hopefully working alongside you guys in the future

I heavily, heavily suggest (and recommend) throttling back.

This forum to succumb to what other forums have succumbed to with vitriolic behavior.

I will not allow this resource to be destroyed.

Thank you! Thank you and Thank you Mr Derg. Civility will always triumph in the end, "cheek to jowl" if necessary.

Ya think newbie ?

In my most civil manner.....you are very green....and lack seasoning.

And if you want to know how I know this...you have but to ask.

And by all means please do....I will attempt to be gracious.

Oh, by the way...I have begun a conversation with Mr Derg.....I believe him to be a man of great dignity.
