Yet Another Digital Logbook Thread — Except I Built This One

So be it.

Pity.
I'm not sure why you would choose to publicly dump on my project when, over the years, I've supported your books, offered airline career advice, and defended you both publicly and privately on JC.

You could have asked questions, publicly or privately. You could have offered feedback on the project. You could have asked how AI was used and what processes I've put in place to ensure the quality of the code and the finished product.

Or you could have simply said nothing.

Those were all choices available to you when responding to someone who's been an ally of yours on JC for years.

Instead, you chose to pass judgment on something I've worked incredibly hard on, with just four words.

After all these years, instead of curiosity, constructive criticism, or even silence, I got “So be it. Pity.”

I'm not dumping on your project. I was excited for it and strongly considering moving to it as a primary logbook until I realized that by the speed of development and selection of massively different languages and UI libraries, you were undoubtedly using AI, something for which I personally see no ethical creative use, and strongly believe is causing massive harm.

I do think that it's incredibly important to disclose the use of generative AI in a project, and I felt it was worth asking that here. I wasn't writing that to start a dialogue on the usage of GenAI, but even if I'm the only one who considers it significant, it affects my decision to purchase it, so I felt it was appropriate to ask. I'm sorry you don't like the term vibe-coded, but it's the term in general use until a different one comes along.

And to be clear, that was my version of saying nothing. I don't understand why allyship would dictate my response, or lack thereof, in this case. I don't believe in quid-pro-quo allyship or friendship. I believe in open and direct communication, rather than establishment of political lines between supporters and detractors.

What harm is he causing in your ex-profession? This seemed to be a passion project for him. There was no job loss due to AI. I’m assuming if he had to pay a bunch of coders to do the work AI did, this project would simply not exist or be a shell of the product he is currently providing.

I’m all for saving jobs that AI is coming for, but this is just a weird flex.

Yawn.

Yikes… good work @Ian_J! I’m using the file anytime logbooks provided me and adding on to there but haven’t figured out where to go from there. Kinda want something mobile. This might be it!
