Yet Another Digital Logbook Thread — Except I Built This One

Some of you have probably noticed (or maybe not! :)) I’ve been a little scarce around here lately. There’s a reason.

For the last few months I’ve been building Blue Deck, an electronic pilot logbook for Windows.

It started as my own personal logbook. I’d gotten frustrated with some of the options out there and decided to build exactly what I wanted for myself. Somewhere along the way it went from “this is pretty cool” to “other pilots might actually want this,” and I apparently accidentally started a software company.

Blue Deck is built primarily with professional pilots in mind. It does all the normal logbook stuff — flights, aircraft, totals, reports, currency, queries, simulator time, IACRA, etc. — but I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time on the annoying parts: importing old logbooks, finding questionable data, backups, keeping aviation data current, and generally trying to make maintaining a career logbook require as little work as possible.

For the UAL folks, there’s some additional magic. Blue Deck can use and reconcile multiple CCS data sources, which makes keeping it updated pretty painless. But it is absolutely not a UAL-only logbook — the core application is built for pilots generally, with the UAL stuff as an extra layer.

There’s also the Pilot Portal, which lets you publish a secure, read-only copy of your logbook and access it from your phone, tablet, or basically anything with a browser — including offline.

One thing that mattered to me from the beginning: your logbook is yours. Your data lives locally, the desktop license is permanent, and I'm not interested in holding anyone's career history hostage behind a subscription.

Anyway, today was the official launch, which is pretty surreal after staring at this thing for months.

I’m not really posting this here as a sales pitch. A bunch of you have known me for a very long time, and this is basically where I’ve disappeared to. I figured I should finally show you what I’ve been building.

There’s an unlimited-time demo if you want to screw around with it:

Blue Deck: Blue Deck | Digital Logbook for Airline Pilots

Happy to answer questions here, too.

That’s awesome! Just curious if you’ve tested the data transfer from Log10Pro or others? I’m tired of paying every year, but I don’t have anything Windows anymore.

Best of luck with this project.

Thanks!

And yeah, log10 was actually the first import profile I built! Those guys charge WAY too much for what they do. I've got refined logbook profiles from about 10 other logbooks right now and it imports those exports very well. It imports log10 even extra well because 1 - 280 columns in their "export" - come on - they are trying to make it so their customers can't switch- and 2 - #### logtenpro.

Any chance of a mac version? If you need help coding it ... ;9

It's next on the docket! You think Mac/OS first or an iOS app first?
For me, MacOS. I don't want my logbook on a phone. But I'm not the typical user. It's likely iOS would sell better. Either way, depending on what the backend is written in, it's a pretty well-aligned developer experience between the two now, especially as pretty much everything is ARM..

iOS app please and thank you!!
For sure - but Shark Heart is right - that's a lot of info for a phone. I've got an iOS web app version for my current set up - logbook lives on windows and pushes to the app - you can view, search, and get reports. Not bad at all.

But all the importing and storage - that's a lot for a phone. It'll be a fun problem to solve.

I’m more looking for being able to put in flights on the “app” and have it integrate with the actual program. Cool setup though. I’ll look at it more later.

Awesome job!

I miss having a desktop logbook. I’ve been wedded to LogTenPro because I use iOS devices but Windows PCs. The one feature I use the most is I load my flights into LogTen pre-trip for the 117 tracker. It’s tedious loading my trip in manually every time but having my own 117 calculator I can easily update in real time with the difference between actual and scheduled times has saved my bacon multiple times. Give me an iOS app that syncs to the desktop but can be updated real time to track my 117 times I’ll be shoveling money your way.

Overall I like the look and feel and will putz with the demo some more. Had a couple things that I need to look into more but might have some idea for features.

I've toyed with logging my 121 flights, but so far a bit over 4 years in, I have yet to remember at block in. So like, I want to do this. I just don't think I have the follow through. But I appreciate the work, and the help this might provide to our community, that's rad. Thank you!

spoken as one very confident he’ll never need a logbook again

Just download your reports and upload them. I download my roster at the end of the month and upload them right into LogTen.

I'll find something else to do if this ship sinks. Maybe it would involve logbooks, but probably not. Most likely it would involve me being fully retired (or at least being retired from this job), and let the wife fully do her career, for once.
