Yak 52 owners/pilots?

Well, I am back in the "need a different airplane" kick..

Been looking around a little bit and am reconsidering the Yak 52.. I've got a handful of time in them, but sm not hugely familiar with their operating costs in terms of yearly costs..

Anyone own or operate one enough to have an idea? Just starting the serious research again and thought I'd start here..
 
Good to hear from you again Tram, Being a poor regional airline pilot I don't own one but I know some people who know some people that do. I'll put my feelers out and see if I can't get you a name and number of someone to call.
 
I need to stay in general topics, the other forums make me ill.. ;)

There are a few quasi-locally.. Mostly Nanchang Cj-6's which are cheaper to operate, go faster and burn less fuel.. They also cost more..

I'll be losing a good bit with the RV.. I'll go from 7gal/hour to 25+/hour.. I'll be going from 160kts to ~140kts.. I'll be going from tailwheel to trikey gear..

Don't really do much XC in the 6 anymore now that we are s family of 4. I usually just go up and have a good time and I'm thinking the Yak would be a good place to go..

I fly the CJ-6A, which is somewhat similar to the Yak-52.. though not the same.

I can give you the information of many Yak guys that we fly with. The -52 is a great airplane, personally would prefer the -52TW. The M-14 is a good engine, fairly cheap to maintain. The Yak-52 will burn a little more gas than the CJ, and has a slightly lower cruise speed, and feels a little smaller in the cockpit.

The biggest differences you probably already know, the pneumatic system, as well as opposite P-factor/Torque, etc. It's a great airplane to fly.. the Yak is IMHO a lot more aerobatic than the CJ, but the CJ feels more stable overall. The biggest problem most new pilots (to the airplane) have is the whole brake on the stick (pnuematic) with no toe-brakes... just rudder deflection (brake differential). The nose wheel is a free castor.

As for operating costs - The CJ with fuel, overhaul reserve, etc will run about $90/hr for a high figure. I usually figure on around 17-18gph for light acro/cruise-ish stuff. The mx is very easy though... putting a new cylinder on can be done pretty easily. Red Star Pilot's association is very helpful with specific figures

Yeah, that standard "5-ship" formation. :)

Sometimes, you're right...the camera ship is sometimes the flight lead, but not all the time. When I've flown camera ships around formations like this, the flight lead is still leading and the camera ship is simply moving around the formation.

In addition, wingmen aren't *supposed* to be completely locked on to the airplane next to them 100% of the time. If they're able to maintain deconfliction and maintain position, it's nice if they can look around maintain SA outside the formation, too. If he was #2, if he's able to look away, then good on him.

I hate flying with a helmet in those airplanes - you can barely turn your head. They make a 'bubble' deal that helps out, but otherwise it's pretty tight.

Good to know.. Never flown with more than a headset in them.. We are still a little ways a way and things may change, but we are headed down the path..
