XM weather

Is anyone using the XM satellite weather? I was reading an article about it, and it looks like it might be worthwhile. As I understand, you can also use it to listen to music for those long flights. Any reviews would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Got to play with the 396 on a couple of trips. Its ok I guess. I don't think you could listen to music through the handheld though. The main reason the capt bought it is because we flew into some airports without any weather service what so ever and he wanted a better picture than what flight service could give. It was nice to be able to pick up current metars enroute. I don't remember how much it cost but I believe it was around 2 grand just for the unit and another 30 a month for the service.

I got allot better things to do with a few grand.

Its a good tool. Its great to have as opposed to nothing at all. You can get METARs, cloud tops, areas of intense weather, etc, etc. Not only that, but with the XM you can jam to some music while checkin the wx. Btw, I used XM weather on the G1000s, so I dont know how it works on the other systems

We use it at work. We also use the FIS uplink from the ground in some airplanes.

The nexrad radar is great for being able to make decisions a couple of hundred miles in advance. But it's usually at least a minute or two old. So while you're picking your way through a line of thunderstorms, you really need onboard radar to give you the "right now" picture.

Being able to pull up METARs, TAFs, PIREPs, AIRMETs, etc. is priceless.

How do you pull up AIRMETs? I can only see the boundaries but I can't actually read the text.

Amen to the WX info in flight. Awesome stuff. There are times when I'll just go out to the A/C to check the weather, by looking at the XM products, rather than get on the computer and phone briefings.

The music is cool, but the type of audio panel you have greatly affects the utility of in flight music.

We've got a 396 with this service, but I haven't used it yet. One of these days.

I've been doing most of my flying with aircraft with panel mounted GPS systems, so I don't spend much time with the 396. I'll probably take it with me, though, on my long 250 nm XC.

XM weather on the G1000 is awesome and XM radio is even better, shooting approaches listening to snoop dogg :)

I have the 396 with all the XM. I use it for cloud tops and radar activity along with winds aloft. I love the music. I know I don't even touch the usefullness of it. I was listening to headline news yesterday coming back from Scottsdale getting an update on the plane crash in miami than with two buttons I was listening to slaughter. Makes cross country's much funner. However I have missed a few calls also because of the music to loud
