XC ideas out of DFW

I'm in the xc phase of my commercial ticket and am looking for any ideas on interesting 100-150nm cross country trips. I've been flying out to random airports and then stopping in KSEP for BBQ at the Hard 8, but I know there must be some other gems out there. Any of you folks from the DFW area have any fun trip ideas you'd like to share? I love flying, but it's nice to have a something to do at the destination. Has anyone ever flown to Dublin to check out the Dr. Pepper museum there? I'm not from around here, so it's pretty much all foreign to me.

Thanks

john

CLL has a decent night life to check out, and there's always AUS. 'Course you could always fly to Shiner to check out the brewery, just don't plan on flying home right afterwards. :)

Which airport are you flying out of?

I'll second College Station. Head on down htere, get the crew car and go down to the A&M campus for some freebirds. Ask at the FBO for directions, they'll take care of you.

Abiline also has Joe Allen's.

Or you could head out to Sulphur Springs and check out the Legend Cub factory.

I like West Texas. San Angelo, Brownwood. Dublin was a good idea too. I'd love to fly out to Alpine/Big Bend area if you're really in for a flight.

Aww yeah, thanks for the ideas. What's in Llano? I've never been to the Shiner Brewery, that could actually be a fun trip. I'm planning on doing one to Amarillo just because my folks moved there. Austin sounded fun at first, but I've heard the fees there are steep, and I'd have to get a rental. Now the Ledgend Cub factory is very interesting to me. I'm going to google that right now. I should be working but I'm trying to plan some trips so I can just pull the plans, check the wx and go whenever I get the chance. I think College Station, would be a good weekend trip if I can find some coeds to take me in for the night.

I'm currently flying out of DTO, but I live downtown Ft. Worth. If anyone would like to split some time for a camping trip out to Big Bend, I'd be interested. I think that could be an awesome trip.

Yeah, that's the place. It's way farther from me than FTW, but I wasn't happy with the 141 option there.

if fees at AUS are steep, check out the airport up north of town in georgetown, just a short drive into austin proper...

go down to the A&M campus for some freebirds.

Is that the burrito place or a different freebirds? If it is the burrito place thats worth the trip right there.
You can also fly down to Del Rio (KDRT) and cab it across into mexico for the...uh, night life.

EDIT: Oh crap, I didn't even read your post. I see you've already done this. Freebirds sounds good if you want to go aways.

Go to Stephenville (Clark Field Muni, KSEP). Park and tie down and take one of the complimentary golf-carts (careful, they're gas and go fast :P) to the Hard Eight BBQ joint (follow the signs). Eat BBQ, the come back to DFW. Its around 60-70 nm from DFW.

Llano = Cooper's BBQ
Stephenville = Hard 8 BBQ
Brenham = Blue Bell Ice Cream Factory Tour
College Station = Freebirds (Yes, the burrito place)
Shreveport = Casino's
Abilene = Joe Allens BBQ
Hot Springs = Great scenery and... well... Hot Springs
Galveston = Shrimp
Lubbock = County Line Smokehouse & Llano Estacado Winery Tour
Amarillo = The Big Texan (Home of the 72oz. steak... they will pick you up at the airport)
Fredricksburg = Hangar Hotel and Airport Diner on the field... just taxi up.
One more fun thing... not a XC... but super cool. VFR into the bravo... head towards Love and Downtown Dallas at night. Contact Love approach and ask for a tour around Downtown at or below 1500'. They will clear you and then fly around the buildings at night... it is friggin' awesome. I'd always take my students up there as one of their last rides with me. I've taken my best friends son for his birthday and my wife too... it's a site to see. The Dallas skyline is absolutely beautiful all lit up at night... especially when your flying around it!

There's more... those are the more memorable ones that stuck out for me... I'll go back through my logbook and see what else I can dig up.

If you are in for something really different but willing to put in a little time, try 24F Cypress River. Go into Jefferson and see what life was like 100 years ago. Lots of stuff to see especially if your into historical things. Airport is about 1.5 miles from town. I called the airport manager number and the guy's wife (manager is county commissioner and retired pilot) was more than happy to give a ride into town.

Airport used to be a emergency field for Barksdale in LA, WWII era

I'd just like to add that we do have Freebird's in Dallas now. There are more than one, but the one I know of for sure is on Greenville Ave near the Village.

Nothing worth seeing in College Station, it's a hole.

I'll second Shreveport. It's no Vegas, but if you're good at Blackjack you can pay for your trip. Just go easy on the free drinks if you're leaving the next morning.
