XBox On The Road?

I just got the PS3 and MW2 tonight. I am updating the system as we speak. Pizza, an 18 pack of beer, and MW2... can't wait to get my game on!

@Matt - you mean you weren't taking your 360 with you already? I swear anytime I log on you're online, day or night...
 
I'm breaking down and buying a 360 either tomorrow (if scheduling doesn't use me) or Tuesday.

It will probably take a few weeks for me to figure out the xbox controller vs. using a mouse to aim, but then, it's game on.

If you can wait until black Friday and want to brave the crowds, Best Buy looks like it's gonna have an awesome deal on an Elite system. You can always sell the games on craigslist if you don't want 'em too, but seems like a good deal for an Elite.

There is NO WAY I am getting up to get in line for a 4am door. Besides, there are only 12 per store.

EDIT: What's the "elite" system? More HD?

Sorta. You can buy the Elite's HD separately. Honestly, unless you're a Rock Band nut like me, someone who downloads a LOT of HD movies from Xbox Live (and they're crazy prices) or you install all your games to the HD, the 60 gig will do you fine. Other than that, the Elite is just a cool black color. If you want the LARGEST HD, that's on the MW2 edition Xbox that just came out.

Of those games they have coming with the Xbox, Lego Batman and Pure come with EVERY Xbox Elite. The other 4 are games they can't sell anyway, and Gamestop doesn't give hardly anything for trade-in value for them. Spiderman:Web of Shadows is THE worst Spiderman game every made, the Sonic game isn't even as good as the Genesis games, Wall-E is....well, it's a video game of a movie, and Ghost Recon 2 is just MW2 lite. Very lite. It's a good deal, BUT I don't personally think it's worth getting up at the crack of dawn.

As for the RRoD, call Microsoft customer service, and they'll talk you through it. Either that or you can just do it all via Xbox.com. You have to provide a shipping box, but you can print out a shipping label to stick on it. They pay shipping there and back via UPS.

How do you do that? Also, is there any benefit....game runs faster, console runs quieter/ cooler, etc..??? Do you still need to put the disks in the drive when you want to play the game?

Put the game you want to install in the disc drive, got to the dashboard, My Xbox, Game Library. Select the game from there, and there should be an option to install it to the HD. It takes a little bit, and it'll eat up some HD space. I had problems with Lego Indiana Jones 2 freezing on me. Once I installed it to the HD, no more freezes. It's generally quieter since a lot of the loading from the disc is gone. SOME games run a little faster, and some games even have their load times more or less erased. Depends on the game, really. You still need to put the disc in the drive because of copyright issues. Don't want guys Gameflying a bunch of stuff and having stacks of HDs around with pirated games, I guess. I'm sure someone's found a way around it, though.

Most of the time, unless I'm having load issues, I just play games from the disc.

Ok, so I am going to get an xbox this afternoon (as a reward for surviving my dentist appointment).

Should I spent the extra $100 on the Elite system to get the bigger HD (does it do anything beneficial for me really?), the second controller and the headset? I'm thinking it might be worth it as the controller and headset have to be around $100 total anyways. Also, what do most people do about the wifi? They sell a usb dongle for $100 bucks. Is there a cheaper option? Am I better off just running a cat5 cable across the room to the box? I'm a PC gamer at heart and I can't stand playing PC games over wifi due to lag. I'll probably need to pick up an HDMI cable as well, although for now I can probably use the one between my PC and TV.


Anything else I should think about?

The WiFi works well, but Cat5 works better.. and is cheaper. I just put my wireless router/cable modem in my TV entertainment center. I wireless to my PC, not the XBox.

If you want to play online with the rest of us, the Headset is a must-have.

Being able to talk smack, pass intel, and call out for assistance, etc, helps a good deal. It's fun, too.

What you might do is look at the generic/ off brand accessories (second controller, etc..) and headset, and then look at the cost of just buying the machine and getting the 'non-official' (cheaper) accessories a la cart.

Much cheaper that way. Ebay is your friend, by the way.

Ditto the above. The larger HD is nice, but like I've said earlier, unless you do a LOT of stuff that requires a LOT of disc space, the 60 gig will be plenty. Heck, it took me a year of downloading Rock Band songs before I filled the thing up.

The headset IS a must have for on-line gaming, but be careful which one you get. The Microsoft one is....well, cheap, for what you pay for it. I have two. One doesn't work, and the other is held together by a rubber band that my wife jury rigged to make it work. I'm planning on buying a better one by Plantronics at some point.

If you get the wireless controllers.....get rechargeable batteries. I've got the kind that just click into the back of the controller. Nothing like being in the middle of a firefight and seeing <whoop> "Please reconnect controller."

I've got the Microsoft wireless adapter, and I haven't really noticed any lag on any of my games when playing on Xbox Live. That being said, it IS $100. Now that I have an internet capable blu-ray player, I'm looking at some sort of wireless set up that can connect to my existing wireless network, then hooking in the Xbox and the blu-ray via Cat5 cable. The cable for the cable modem is back in the study, so moving the wireless router to the living room isn't really an option.
 
I got the Elite with the 120HD. They also talked me into a recharge and play pack for the controller. I also picked up 50 feet of cat5 so I should be able to run from the router to the Xbox on the other side of the room. I'll set it up tonight after I eat dinner. It might be a few days before I feel confident enough with a controller instead of a mouse and keyboard to venture into the online world.
