Xanax

Pilot and A Half (for now
I know Xanax is one of the medications that is not approved by the FAA. I will probably have to have some dental work done soon and none of the dentists around here use gas anymore. A few years ago I had to take one Xanax on the day I had blood drawn to help me get over a bad experience I had before. If I ask the dentist to write me a prescription for one xanax and only take it on the day I have work done would I have to wait the six months to get a medical?

Thanks!

Obviously, I'm not a doctor, but why not just get a novacaine injection?
I need the Xanax to relax enough to get the injection. I am a total chicken when it comes to needles. (Those things DO hurt.)

My dentist prescribes me a halcium tablet if I get any dental work done. I have an extreme phobia of the dentist. I take it 30 minutes before the appointment and the next thing I remember is the car ride home.

Boy, I'm weird...I actually LIKE the dentist... :dunno: :bandit:

Also, I have a question for the good Dr. I was under the impression that anti-anxiety/anti-depression drugs like Xanax needed to be taken for a couple of weeks to get the optimum effect on the anxiety/depression. How does one pill taken close to the time of dental work, work?

Sounds good, but I still have to be able to drive. I know I can drive with Xanax.

I'm not a doctor, but the xanax is a benzodiazepine as opposed to an MAOI or an SSRI and is much more fast acting the the last two I mentioned. Take the xanax, thirty minutes later feel the effects.

Xanax like all benzos are fast acting and have a half life of about 12hrs. Some anxiolytic drugs like buspirone must be taken for up to 2-3 weeks before the effects are evident. Many anti-depressants also must be taken for several weeks before the effects manifest, like SSRIs but the class of drugs is different. An anti-depressant might help anxiety in the sense that as a rule youre probably more anxious if youre depressed but the same person might be prescribed xanax or valium to use as needed for anxiety attacks which are short term.

Mom is on these meds, hence my knowledge in the area.

An interesting statistic that I read the other day -- 87% of the time a person is detained for DUI and pass a breathalyzer test they test positive for benzos.
