Not only that, but when VS went from "fixed wing anti-submarine" to "fixed wing, sea control" mission definition; they started dropping more than just torpedoes, mines and sonobuoys and started dropping more Mk82s and Mk20s and the like.

Yeah, neither of said dudes ever flew an anti-sub hop in the entire time they were in S-3's. By the time they got there 10 years ago, they had stopped training to it. Mostly SSC, and like you said, some very rudimentary manual bombing.....and of course the money maker mission, buddy tanking.

I think VQ squadrons flew some S-3s too for their spook-type missions they did.

Yeah, little known 1980's Reagan Navy variants included (for a few short years), the ES-3 and the US-3 (the baby COD). Should have kept them IMHO, especially with the EA-3 going away in that time period.
