Wrong date on the medical

A guy showed up at my school, who has failed a private checkride once, needed some re-training to go for the checkride again. While going through his documentation, I noticed that the birthdate on his medical was incorrect - the doctor had put the exam date instead.

Since he's flying a new type (moving from DA40 to C172), he needs a new endorsement and I wanted him to get the medical fixed before I'd let him solo in any of our airplanes.

What do you guys think? Am I being to strict with that? Or would it be a potential trouble to send him with the mistyped medical? I know it's a fairly easy fix to call his doctor and get it reissued but for some reason he has been avoiding doing that for a while.

:yeahthat: Have him get it fixed first, since you already know about it, you can't claim you don't.

I agree with all of them and you, it is your ticket man guard it from those nasty black suits!!!

It may be a PITA for your student and he may balk a little, but rules are rules. What happens if he is ramp checked? What happens if the DPE catches it? I would guess all he needs to do is contact the issuing AME to set it straight.

Thanks for the support guys! The end of the story is that he ended up bailing out on me since I would not let him solo. But I think I'm better off that way.

I had a student with a medical that had the hyphen in her name in the wrong place.. DPE didn't like it and we had to wait for a new medical for her to take the checkride. I cannot imagine having the wrong birth date on a medical.

Good Catch, I wouldn't sign it either. He definately needs to get it fixed. The AME should be able to correct it in less than 15 minutes. The normally keep a supply of medical certs around for just such mistakes. It will be a slightly different size though. I had it done once and I think they are just a tad smaller than the originals.
