Written Missed Questions

Guys,

I am reviewing the questions I missed on the test and I am looking through the FAA PVT Pilot Knowledge data base and I notice some of the questions have the same code. Is there any way of knowing the exact questions I got wrong?

The codes for the 4 questions I missed are:

PLT012, PLT161, PLT 414, PLT511

Thank you in advance.

I haven't done it myself, but I have heard that if you call the FAA testing people, they will discuss it with you. I don't know that they'll give you the actual questions, but that's your best shot. I do know they get such phone calls periodically.

Thanks guys. I went through the gliem book and figured it out this morning. This system sucks! They want you to retrain on the questions you miss but they don't tell you the actual questions. :dunno:

They want you to retrain on the questions you miss

No, they don't, which is what the guys above were telling you. They want you to retrain on the subject areas where the student was deficient, not the actual questions. The questions are just a sampling of the knowledge the student is supposed to have, not the entirety of it.

I understand on retraining on the subject areas. My issue is that in one subject area you could have 25 questions and missed one. That subject area could cover multiple topics so you have no way of knowing exactly what you missed. You may not need training on the entire subject.

My .02 opinion is that the system sucks when it comes to helping the student understand exactly what he or she missed.

It's a matter of not knowing the subject area. Weather one part of it, or the whole thing. It's not your/my job to make the regs. But it is to follow them. Who's to say that one question was only brought up the whole test, or mabey three were, then missed one question, and guessed right on the other two.....

sorry to zombified this thread :)

Question is I just took the FII to become a part-time CFI and got 1 wrong. So I remember it in the review and went back home to check. I checked and I am 110% sure I choose that answer which was right but I got marked wrong?

Is there a way to fix this?

That, and the fact that it doesn't let you know if you missed the question because of a simple error, a misunderstanding, or a significant lack of knowldege.

I doubt it, even if there was a way it's not worth it. You passed, apparently with a very high score too, that's plenty good.

I had a very similar experience, but it has been maybe 15 years ago. I endorsed a fellow to take the test to add GLIDER to his instructor certificate. He knew the material backwards and forwards. I don't remember his exact score, but it was something like an 80%. We sat down together right after the test and went through each subject area code and picked the exact questions he had from each of those areas. In each case, his answer (as he remembered it) was the correct answer. We could accept that there might be one or two errors on that 25 questions test, but not enough to get such a low score.

We started to pursue the question. I believe the testing center was CATS. At any rate, we got in touch with someone there and they checked to see if there had been any transmission errors. In the process, the fellow we were talking with said that he wasn't allowed to discuss specific questions, but he was looking at the test and he said that he was a CFI and although he wasn't a glider rated instructor, it seemed obvious to him that at least three of the missed questions had the wrong answer in the answer key.

I then contacted a friend in Oklahoma City who was a manager there and related the story to him. He called me back a couple days later and said that he had tried to get the people who control the tests to let him see what they were using for questions and what they had marked as the correct answers because there was serious concern that the test had multiple errors. He said they not only wouldn't show him anything, but that after he left they had their senior manager call his boss and tell him to keep that guy out of their area. ..... So much for trying to improve the quality of the product.

I might also add an even older story in the same area. I took the Bill Phelps Ground School in preparation for the ATP knowledge test. It was an excellent three day course. At the end, they taught how to take a test and then they ended up by having us memorize a couple questions. These were questions that their research showed were wrong in the FAA's answer key. They said they had even provided that information to the FAA and the FAA's answer was that they didn't want to change the answer key because (wait for it), it would de-standardize the test.

So, to answer your question, I don't know of any way to fix it. However, if you find one, please let us all know.

As does Laser Grade (PSI) testing centers.

Thanks for that information. Obviously that is something that has changed over the years. It would definitely be something every instructor should tell the student to do before leaving the testing facility.

yeah I took it at the lasergrade center. It was PLT012. How long it will take yadiyadayda...question.
The asa test prep clearly showed how to work the problem. So I don't know why the FAA hasn't looked into this and correct these "errors"

Thank god I'm not the only one with this problem. Thanks for shedding some of your light.

Holy Necropost batman. Seeing tgrayson in the thread got my hopes up. I knew it was too good to be true.

Anyway. I just took my ATP written. I got a 99%. The question I missed was an easy one. Airspeed below a Class B. I answered it correctly as I know it is 200 knots. Not sure if it was a CATs error or maybe I accidentally hit the wrong bubble. Kind of annoying though.

First time post here, but I figured I'd jump right in since I encountered what I suspected were errors when I took the FOI last summer. The manager of the testing center, which was also a part 141 flight school, suggested that I contact the FAA's Airman Testing Standards Branch directly if I suspected erroneous questions on the exam. The link below has their contact info. I have Mr. Roberts' email as well, which I can share via PM rather than post it on a public forum.

I hope that helps.
