WORST time to get sick....

Airdale

Man, last night after dinner, while surfing the web I got hit with a ton of bricks. Swollen glands, throbbing headache. I immediately popped some tylenol. This morning I woke up, had to walk 4 blocks in the rain to Walgreens where I bought two packs of day quil cold/flu, a tube if Airborne, Cold Eez cough drops and vicks vitamin c drops. I just started sim training TONIGHT!!!

Oh my was it horrible. My head felt like it was going to explode the whole 4 hours we were in the box. My performance wasn't horrible, they actually told me I did pretty good considering my current condition. Man this sucks! This is the absolute worst time if there ever was a worst time to get sick. I am just affraid that I might have something that might need anti biotics, which would mean I'd have to leave training, and I'd rather try and get through running a fever then have to come back for training later.

So doc, I'm popping Day Quil every 4 hours, taking vitamin cough drops every few hours and drinking glassess of airborne. What else can I do to get rid of this thing quickly? And, how can I tell if this is something serious, like strep throat? My throat really isn't *that* bad. Really my biggest complaint is bad headache, clogged ears and nose and of course a bit swollen glands. Please tell me this is just a cold I can shake in a few days - I've got some serious sim training coming up and I've gotta be sharper then a needle. Glad I just enrolled in my health plan tonight.

did you pick up some zicam? those work pretty good... i'd stay on the airbornes! can you afford (as in not feel drugged in the AM) a tylenol pm to help you sleep?

I know the doc will have more info than i can offer.

I would read up a little about that Airborne stuff before you blow a bunch of money on it. There is Zero proof it does ANYTHING more than a vitamin C pill.

"Airborne said that a double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted with "care and professionalism" by a company specializing in clinical trial management, GNG Pharmaceutical Services.
GNG is actually a two-man operation started up just to do the Airborne study. There was no clinic, no scientists and no doctors. The man who ran things said he had lots of clinical trial experience. He added that he had a degree from Indiana University, but the school says he never graduated. "I would not define that then as a clinical trial," Kroll said.
Airborne insists the results are valid, but the company is removing all references to the study from its Web site and packaging.
"We found that it confused consumers," Donahue said. "Consumers are really not scientifically minded enough to be able to understand a clinical study."
Now, Airborne is phasing in new packaging. Before, the box said that Knight-McDowell had created it because she was "sick of catching colds." Now, it says she created Airborne because she "needed help supporting her immune system." The word "cold" no longer appears on the new package or in the advertising.
All the new packages will be on store shelves by this summer.

Sounds like a cold and you are doing all you can do. These things go away in a week if you treat them and 7 days if you don't treat them. Stick with what you are doing.

Thanks. I think the fever broke last night. I woke up at 4am because my ears were throbbing badly along with my head. I was planning on calling HR to locate the nearest doctor this morning if I woke up feeling worse. Luckily this morning I feel a bit better. My ears and head aren't throbbing, just have a cloudy head and sore glands. Hopefully the worst is over and the recovery will be quick. Flying the sim last night was painful, but somehow I managed to keep it together and fly pretty good.

I believe Airborne is a good product. I've used it before at the first sign of a cold, and 99% of the time I felt 100% better the next day. I caught this cold/flu late, but I drank 3 glassess of airborne yesterday. I think its helping. It has like 1,060% of the daily value of Vitamin C. I don't think that can hurt.

Get some Afrin nose spray for the next 4 days.

I've been fighting a cold the past few days (though a trip too which sucks) and was really stuffed up. I was taking Sudafed, but wasn't getting any relief so I went and got some Afrin today. Holy crap... that stuff is the bomb. I was breathing no problem in about 20 seconds. My noise is still running like OJ in a Bronco but at least I can breath. Doc, it is FAA approved right? There really isn't an official list as far as I can tell but multiple sources said it was ok.

Just an update. Day 3 of my cold, I feel like I've kicked this thing in the nads and took a name. Feel 98% better today and my sim performance showed. I was on top of things. Thanks for the advice and Kristie, thanks for the recommendation for Zicam. Bought a bottle of that yesterday. Overall I'm feeling a lot better. My ears are still wacky, but I'm good enough to stay sharp in the sim.

Thats gotta be a new record for me, come down sick on monday, kick it to the curb on wed. I'm still taking the cold remedies and vitamins, at least for another 48hrs to make sure it doesn't reappear.

Okay...well I thought the monkey was gone. Not so. Still lingering just a bit. I just feel under the weather again, so I'm pumping the vitamins - again. My room mate got what I had, he's also my sim partner. This dude is sick! Last night he was up till 3am coughing. Today he went to the local hospital to try and get some meds. I'm wondering if thats why I'm getting a minor relapse of what I had, because he is still sick as a dog. I can't wait for training to be done. 3 more days. I've thought about getting my own room here. We both can't be sick in the sim.

It takes a week plus to get over this stuff. You are not yet quite at a week. Time will cure you.

Thanks doc. I've been trying to drink 1 bottle of water an hour today. When I was in the military and we got sick, the docs made us drink a bottle of water an hour. Seemed to help, so I'm resorting to the old trick. :)

I feel bad for my roommate though. He's at the hospital right now trying to get something for his cold/flu. OTC stuff isn't working at all for him.

About half of my class got really sick during training also. It was during groundschool though, so it was a little easier to deal with then during sim. We blammed it on the food at the Worst Western. Hope you all get better
