Worst/Best Airports

Best- SAN, MRY, SMF

Worst - FRA, PHL, RDU

Purely from a cool approach, good ATC, and asinine procedures standpoint or lack thereof. SAN and MRY are both simple airports with cool approaches. Who doesn't like opening the door in July to find it 72 and sunny with a cool breeze? Flying into or out of SMF to the east over Tahoe was always cool to me. Plus there's that weird little mountain north of the airport.

I've only been to FRA once but the place is mired in procedures and restrictions. They have about 100 arrivals and departures and messed up noise abatement/curfew rules that make everything a giant headache. They even tell you what runway turnoff you have to take in the jepps, and don't you dare call for your clearance unless you're 5 minutes to push! I studied the jepps for this place for about 3 hours and was still left scratching my head.

PHL is a fine overnight and the terminal is OK I guess, but I can't get over their ridiculous ramp with 75 frequencies, the controllers of which apparently do not communicate with one another at all. The fact that most of my flights here were to EWR did not help, sitting on the taxiways for 2 hrs to make a 30 minute flight just seemed silly.

RDU just had rude controllers (sorry if any of them are reading this....but yeah...it's bad). They also like to try and plan your turnoff on that short runway on the east side of the airport and cop a 'tude if you can't do it. Classic "second tier airport that thinks it's a super hub" complex.

I try to do Denver and Dulles flying as much as possible. I'm fine with the controllers, it's the fox alleyway and the ramp controllers in there that makes my head explode. What's his name, the inept guy, will load like 5 airplanes onto the east line and then wonder why nobody can push and why it's a giant mess, then he'll transition people to the west line, and then nobody on that side of the alley can push.

Basically he's an idiot.

He's waaaay better than the "aaaaand....break" guy from Denver. Ninos (ord ramp) would be fine if he didn't spend so much time chastising people. Seriously, sometime when you're in the penalty box time his ramp controlling:chastising ratio. It's a mind-blowing lesson in inefficiency.

My favorite airports are:
Dominca
Havana
Tortola
Asheville
Missoula
Durango
Kalispell
RDU (because it means I'm coming home).

My least favorite is SLC. It's a beautiful place, but I can't stand the traffic management into and out of there.

My last day flying for pay for the forseeable future is tomorrow. There's a lot of places I'm going to miss.

Thanks for the seniority bump!

:)

What are you off to do?

Thanks for the seniority bump!

Man, I hope it works out that way.

I actually got a pretty good TA'ship at UNC Chapel Hill for a Master's in geology. I'll probably make a little "goodbye cruel airline world" post in a little while with my reasoning.

Best of luck man! I'll miss your posts on here....

Decent man, have fun! You can always come back, but remember you're gonna be swinging my gear if you do.

:)

Congrats man. Good luck and don't be a stranger around here.

Thanks for the well wishes, guys!

You're welcome! We're happy to provide the comic relief for this crazy industry. :D

Of course, that's nothing compared to the upcoming Skywest/ASA/Expressjet SLI. That one will probably make the news. :)
