In a glider runaway climb situation, i.e. with the tow rope pulling up instead of back, most tow releases won't open no matter what you do or where you put the handle. Are you talking about the Schweizer style hooks or the European Tost hooks with the back release one them?

Dunno which kind it is. I've only ever seen one kind of release installed on aircraft. Every banner plane I've ever seen used it and every glider tow I've ever seen used it. They look kind of like what is pictured on this website: http://www.bannertowingequipment.com/


Oh wait a minute, I take that back. I've seen banner planes that used belly booms instead of tail releases. But belly booms kind of sucked for anything heavier than a letter banner so we never used them.
