Women Airline Pilots

Today in US History class, we had a substitute teacher since our teacher was absent. The sub, Mr. Trost, is an elderly man who gives trivia to the entire class for the last 10 minutes.

One of the questions that came up was:
"What percentage of airline pilots are women?"

The correct answer, according to him, was 6%. I thought this was way too low and was wondering if anyone could give some insight...

Just curious,
JC

(PS, Today is the day my CFI said I am going to solo for the first time! I'm off to the airport, wish me luck!

I think in the 7 years I flew I saw the percentage go from roughly 5% up to maybe 15% (and that's probably being generous).

The number is rising, but it is not currently very high. The percentage is probably higher at the regionals, as more women have started training in recent years, and would not be at the majors yet.

What might the competitors look like? While the vast majority of pilots today are men, a significant number of women are likely to be in the running for future positions. According to BLS data, 3 out of every 100 pilots in 2001 (3.5 percent) were female. That number may sound low, but consider that women outnumber blacks and Hispanics in the cockpit by a ratio greater than 2-to-1. And when you look at the gender of pilots by their age, the story grows even more compelling: The chance that a pilot will be a woman is 6.7 percent among pilots 25- to 34-years-old. And when it comes to professional pilots ages 20 to 24, fully a third are of the female persuasion.

I'd worry if you were noticing their male pilots....

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Don't forget, we did have someone make some comments about a new ExpressJet male pilot and how cute he was.

He was flying for someone else then, but that's besides the point.

First off ... Congradulations on your solo ... let us know how it went and how you felt.

Secondly I don't know stats but two of my past female copilots have since upgraded to Capt. on the B-737. They were absoulutely qualified and competent for this responsability. Its too bad for women ( in this industry ), because if they get something someone always wants to qualify how they got it other than giving them thier due credit for thier shear determination and qualification. In the case of the two pilots I mentioned they were every bit as disciplined and competent as any male pilot I've flown with civilian or Military.

650, Solo didn't happen, CFI thought it was a little too windy, which is fine with me..I'm in no rush. (Rush to get my PPL July 11, my 17th birthday)..but thanks for asking!!

Hmmmm good question I'm not an airline pilot....yet so I'm not sure perhaps some of the airline pilots on here might be better able to answer that question.
I think Doug recently said that he has flown with an openly gay pilot at his airline.
I do know this there aren't that many "out" airline pilots so one can only guess at the true number.
But I am hearing more and more about openly gay pilots so there numbers will only continue to grow and those in the closet in the future might come out into the open...if they should so feel inclined.

I'm not going to give any specifics but I've flown with a number during my career.

Hmmm, I would say the percentage is the same as ANY other profession. I know three openly gay flight instructors here at UND... seems that this profession is tolerant and accepting of all walks of life, which is how it should be.

I'm still waiting for the day I get a cute female FO. We have quite a few, but I think the contract prevents them from flying with me.

There is a national gay pilots association, they would probably have the stats.

Yep, there's an ad on the back of "Flying" mag.

Yes I'm a college student in aviation and what do I know. But girls in my aviation classes are some of the most focused and driven students I've been around. Harder working and better looking, I'll fly with them.

It seemed I flew with them all when I was in Philly, but the next week they were at USAirways.

It bothered me then, but time is a great equalizer.

Actually, it's way too HIGH. Women pilots make up 6% of the TOTAL number of pilots certificates issued in the USA. This includes Private all the way to ATP. He was talking about airline pilots, so the number is lower. Only 3.12% are ATP rated. Of course there are many with a Commercial only flying for an airline (like myself) but even that only totals 4.77% of the total

Total vs. Women by License 2003
625,581 Pilots 36,757 (5.88%)
93,064 Students 10,809 (11.61%)
340 Recreational 26 (7.65%)
251,561 Private 14,554 (5.79%)
121,856 Commercial* 5,807 (4.77%)
141,596 Airline Transport* 4,411 (3.12%)
80,931 Flight Instructors 5,193 (6.42%)
* Total includes women who have dual certificates.
