Woman tried to open door during flight

[ QUOTE ]
DB Cooper didn't open the door, he blew the tailcone if I recall.

That pops out.

Would have if it had been a DC-9. But he was on a 727, so they depressurized the cabin so he could open the aft cabin door on the aft pressure bulkhead, then he extended the airstairs.

In either case, DC-9 or 727 you would first have to depressurize the cabin so as to open the aft door to get access to the tailcone/airstairs area.

With the cabin depressurized you can easily open any exterior door in flight, same as on the ground.

Curiouser and curiouser, folks.

U.S. News and World Report on Cooper

So he jumped at 10K feet. What's the cabin pressurized to on a 727, anyone recall?

And it doesn't matter anyway. It looks like some others tried to copy Cooper, and the FAA said, screw this, we're going to make those stairs only deployable from the outside.

More on Cooper

I remembered that he had given the crew detailed instructions on how to configure the airplane. I thought he had instructed them to depressurize too, but the article doesn't mention it. But I think the differential pressure would have been fairly low at 10,000', depends how the controller was set up and the flight profile. Also since he threatened the crew with a bomb they quite likely would have depressurized the cabin or nearly so while cruising at 10,000 feet. That's sop.

You can deploy them from the inside on he -88/90.

But there's a little 'secret' place you've got to find in order to get them to drop that unless if you knew it was there, you'd never know.

(tee hee!)
