Wisdom Teeth

Hey,

Quick question. I did a search and read what was posted for wisdom teeth... one was ATC related and the other was oxycodone related. Just curious, I need to have my wisdom teeth taken out on this coming Wednesday somewhat unexpectedly and was told by the dentist to hold off on flying for 5 days (not a problem, my employer understood). They said to plan on having a prescription for vicodin but I'm unclear as to how long I'll need to wait after using this until I can fly (is it 24-48 hours?). More than anything, I just wanted to make sure there isn't anything that would disqualify me from flying for an extended period of time I should be aware of. Also, will I have to report this on my next medical?
Thank you!

Vicodin for wisdom teeth extraction? YIKES. My son needs all 4 removed eventually and his oral surgeon said he would prescribe extra strength Tylenol. I had 2 removed and didn't get anything nearly as strong as Vicodin.

I'm not too good at dental work.. I will be having mine out eventually I suppose. Not looking forward to it. I will be requesting all drugs. Yes, I am a wuss. :dunno:

That's what they told me when I went in to the Oral Surgeon today. I have no idea how common or uncommon that is... this will be my first and (hopefully) last wisdom teeth extraction! I really have no idea what to expect and hope I can get away with some extra strength Tylenol or whatever, but at the moment I'm just going off what they told me. I was dreading this... until the pain started (yesterday)... now I just want them out. Unfortunately, I was told by the dentist a year ago that taking them out was in my near future... it's too bad I waited until the pain for me to figure that out! Live and learn.

Just make sure you clean the incision sites as they instruct you! I cleaned mine per their instructions and still got an infection. That was more painful than actually getting the teeth out.

I had my back left wisdom tooth out about 2 months ago or so. I didn't get anything other than local anesthetic and was fine. I was flying the day after. If you got them all pulled I think that you'd be good after 3 days of rest or so. I didn't even bother to get a scrip for pain meds, and had the procedure done at my local dentists office.

Cool. I hope that's how it is for me. I'm just going off what the oral surgeon told me. It will actually work out ok... 3 days of rest followed by my normal 2 day weekend off equals 5. So, I'm really only taking 3 days off from work, but with the way my schedule works I would only be taking a day and a half off if I wanted to fly the last day before the weekend. So, 5 days it is! Hope there's some good baseball games on or something. I hate not working.

Keep in mind it all depends on your situation. I know people who recovered in a day without any medication yet I used the medication for the better part of a week. All four of mine had become embedded in nerves when I had them out. The first few days I didn't need any thing, yet by the third day the pain on one side was bad.

Keep it clean and don't be afraid to use to the medication (although Vicodin seems a little strong). I would give the medication at least a full day to wear off. After 36 hours I was still feeling the effects so be cautious.

The Navy dentist gave me one shot of Novocaine, ripped mine out, and sent me off with 4 Motrin. According to him, I was fine.

I guess I was lucky to have all mine out in H.S. Some of you sound like it was pretty rough. I just had to miss a couple days of school & didn't take hardly any painkillers.

I had 6 teeth (all wisdoms and two others) taken out in one sitting and they gave me vicodin, oxycodone, and ibuprofen. Seems a little overboard, but when it started wearing off it'd start hurting like crazy.

No, I just commented on how I thought Vicodin was a bit strong for wisdom teeth extraction. I find it sad AND infuriating that doctors/dentists today prescribe highly addicting drugs for something that can be dealt with less dangerously. ESPECIALLY, if he's a pilot and taking that crap can affect his flying.

I think I've seen 11 comments and none of them from a "Flight Surgeon".

A lot of our users are looking for reputable sourceable information, which is why we created this forum for people to ask questions and have them answered by a senior AME.

Let's not use it for editorials.

WHile I understand not giving out medical advice by anyone other then the Doc, is it taboo to share our experiences with similar issues??

I think it would be appropriate to enable Dr. Forred to have an opportunity to answer the question without having to sort through editorial comments which may or may not be reflective of how he's going to see the issue as an AME.

He's a very busy guy and we should do all we can to keep him.

Thanks for reminding us, Doug. I think some of us forget about the role of Dr.Forred & are so used to putting in our editorials. I know I'm guilty of this. :o
